Best plug-in for dark/lost detail
« on: January 20, 2008, 04:48:40 am »

I am an amateur in the use of editing programs

I have a Mac computer.

Nikon D80 Camera

18-200 lens

Lightroom software

Photoshop Elements 4 software

Hullo I have numerous photos taken on a recent trip to India, where conditions for good photography outcomes was horrendous.  As a result have numerous issues in my photos to endeavour to rectify.

One being lost of detail.  I recently read that The SR Professional Plugin (SR Pro v1.1 plug-in which is a Shadow Recovery Pro from FM Plugins could assist.

Has anyone used this plug-in?

1.  How well does it work?

2.  Is it easy to use?

thank you

I haven't tried that plugin, but supprisingly the shadow/highlight tool in ACDC pro2 is really very good, I'd hazard to say better than one in PS, it's got more options than PS's which help to control the area your trying to lighten.  Wayne

Absolutely! Do all this work as early in the rendering process as possible (in this case, in Lightroom). Once you get to Photoshop, its often "too late" to "fix" these issues. The Fill light and tone correction tools in LR will do a much better job, faster and with more control on the Raw data.

Yes it works quite well recovering shadow detail in a properly exposed file. It will not lighten an under exposed file (it only works on the shadows) The recommendations for fill light in the RAW processor is a better fix.

I get very good results with the CaptureNX software from Nikon. The U-Point technology is amazing. It is non destructive because you can safe everything from jpg to tif back to NEF.

Thanks for your responses

jørn - As I have Lightroom and Photoshop Elements - I am reluctant to purchase an additional editing software - Unless somebody can convince me otherwise.

I am thinking of the complication in first deciding which editing software is best for the  particular edit and how to achieve a workflow that will work seamlessly.

i know what you mean. But for me Capture NX has it all. You can easily integrate it in your workflow. If you are after good results with easy editing than give Capture NX a try. It comes for free with the new Nikon cameras. And you can download a 30-day trial.

Otherwise the Lightroom fill light tool works good, too. But with Capture NX you can paint the effect where you like it, that is what i use often.
I have Lightroom, C1, Raw Developer and many PS actions but this is by far the best i´ve ever used.

Look at video no 2.

What exactly do you mean by "loss of detail"?

Itf it's simply underexposure on some parts (not all) of the image, Michael and Andrew have already answered - I'll just add that you have the same tool built into Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), and I think the Mac version of PSE4 can handle the latest ACR plugin reasonably well.
If Fill Light cannot restore it, then it is probably a lost cause. NB if you're dealing with jpegs, it may probably be the case (but you can try, nevertheless - miracles do happen from time to time ;o).

You may have to add some noise reduction (chroma first, luminance in case of necessity), and sometimes to push the blacks slider a bit to the right (careful with that axe) to restore some contrast a bit.

From what I see in its page, the plugin you mention has essentially the same effect as Fill light, but as said Andrew you start with much less information than the RAW file.

Since you already have Lightroom I would highly recommend that you get the Lightroom tutorial form this site. It came out when LR was just released, and since then there was a update added which is part of the cost. For the info that is included, the cost is minimal($15). You will gain such an understanding of how LR can work for you, that you may not feel the need to get any plug ins. There is only one that I would recommend any way, but it is a Photoshop only(for now) plug-in.
