Hi -

I will be in the vicinity of Williamsburg, KY next weekend (Jan 25-27). I'll have Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday. Sunday night I need to be in Louisville. Taking pictures and relaxing are the only things on my itinerary.

I am pretty unfamiliar with the area as I've never been anywhere in KY before. Is there snow in the area this time of year?

What I am looking for are good locations to practice my moving water (waterfall, rapids) techniques as well as any advice on good scenic locations in general. There appear to be a fair amount of hills / mountains in the area so good day hike suggestions would be welcome.

My gear consists of a 20d, a tamron 17-50, a canon 70-300, Bogen 3021 tripod and a 322rc2 head.

I've done a little research and it looks like the big south fork river and rec area might be good, but wanted to see if I get any ideas here. Cumberland Gap?

Also, provided forecast stays as is, the lows will stay above my limit of 20F so I will be sleeping in a tent next to my car. Any advice on good campgrounds in the area would be great.

Website links or suggestions of other forums where I could post this would also be welcome.

Thanks!

Well, I did some research and figured I'd share it here in case someone else finds themselves with time on their hands in SE Kentucky.

I am going to head to Big Fork South Recreation Area one day : http://www.nps.gov/biso/  (This site has a really cool google earth link) very helpful.

The other two days I'm heading to cumberland gap area: http://www.nps.gov/cuga/

Other cool Kentucky sites:
http://www.trbphotography.com/ (photos of exactly the kind of stuff I hope to find, well, except for the green leaves and flowers and autumn colors and for all I know all the falls are dry in the winter!)
http://www.kingdomcome.org/maps/pmrar.html (good map of pine mountain area)
http://www.naturepreserves.ky.gov/stewardship/badbranch.htm (bad branch looks pretty cool. Good overall KY outdoors site)
http://parks.ky.gov/ (state parks site)

At least the list of above will give someone else a starting point.

I have no real idea what to expect, but am pretty much out of planning time so just going to go with the above plan. "A good plan today..."

I'll post some pictures when I get back if there's any interest.

Cheers!

Anything to report on your trip?  I'd be interested to know and see some shots.  I live in Lexington, KY but was not a member when you posted.

I would have recommended the Red River Gorge Geological Area...

Red River Gorge
