There are all the 30" displays ?
« on: January 13, 2008, 06:43:27 pm »

Hello,

Just some short background. Right now I own a Eizo CG220, but I really would like to get something bigger. The only size which makes sense is 30". 24 and 26" is nonsense because they don't offer any resolution benefits.

So what happended to all these 30" displays which were announced last year ? What options are there ? I'm looking for a display for photography. I don't care to much about the price.

Now a view questions ?

Does it make sense still to buy a Apple Cinema Display which is now nearly 4 years old ?

What happened to the samsung SyncMaster XL30 ? It sounds so great, but I can't find it anythere in stock in Germany or the US ? Does it even exists ?

Quatographic was talking about 30" but nothing there ?

Eizo doesn't even offer a normal 30" display...

How good are the HP, Dells really ? Are they good enough for real work ? Are they better than the old Apple display ?

Thanks for some input or any news.

There are a few out there that are said to be better then the Apple (which is quite dated really, except the looks department).

There's a new Dell coming out soon, looks a little different, but said to be significantly better (at least according to the spec sheet) then it's previous model.

Eizo do have a 30", but the cost will likely be a little higher then some will wish to pay for.

Samsung though is bringing out one "eventually" with LED backlighting, and is said to display 100% of the aRGB gamut.

Just for the record, Apple "updated" the Cinema display internals -- the backlight among other things -- about a year ago, so it isn't exactly the same monitor it was 4 years ago.  The fact remains it is a very nice monitor to edit on

Generally speaking, yes!  I sit before my 30" Cinema Display right now; upgraded last summer, and it´s GREAT!

More specifically, if you´ve held off this far, give it another day or two....  Tomorrow (Tue 15) is the annual Mac World show, with Steve Jobs´Keynote and all that jazz.  And that usually means upgrades and new products galore.

Also, the MacRumors site´s list of when to buy/not to buy Apple products

( [a href=\"http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#Apple_Cinema_Displays]http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#Apple_Cinema_Displays[/url] )  advices to wait a little, FWIW.

But it IS an awesome monitor!

Thanks for the input. Let's see what Apple is showing today. I'm really hoping for something new, but I'm not so sure about it.

Great I should not have thought about buying a new one
This morning my Eizo kinda chrashed and does not work as it should. The brighntess goss just to a maximum of 59cd/m2, which is not very bright.

So I talked to their support but as always it will take quite some time, but it will take quite some time until they can repair it ...

So now I'm kinda forced to buy a new one. I really would like to go with a 30", so if Apple is not showing me anything new today I have the question which of the two (three) you would choose ?

The "old" Apple screen
or
The Eizo SX3031W
(or)
The Samsung XL30 (the problem here is, that even if I would like to buy it I can't even find a store in Europe which is selling this display ? )

Thanks a lot for the help.

going against the flow here, I really cant see any reason to buy an Apple 30" display apart from the shiny case. they are many hundreds of dollars more than the identical 30" panel in an other brand name on the front. oftent he other brands have better features too (more USB hubs, built in card readers, etc)

If you really must have the apple logo on front of your Korean panel, then go ahead and pay the heavy premium, if not, then many others from Dell, HP, Samsung, etc, will give you the exact same results, and you could give some needed money to charity rather than to Mr Jobs.

I thought he same thing too, until I used them in stores.  The Apple is clearly better than the Dell at least - off axis colors and brightness are uniform with the Apple, not so witht he Dell (or my 24" Dell).

I have to disagree here. All the objective comparisons show that the 30 inch Dell is superior to the Apple 30 inch. It is also cheaper and offers more functions.

That's why I decided to go with the Dell on my Mac Pro.

cheers,
Bernard

It looks like the Samsung XL24 LED monitor will be available Feb 1st in the US for the price of $2250.

It advertises 123% of NSTC color, 100% of AdobeRGB as well as sRGB and CMYK. It has a 14 bit LUT, 16:10 aspect ratio, 1000:1 contrast ratio and 8 ms response time. It ships with the eye 1 display 2 calibrator.

Bernard,
I haven't seen any comparisons of the 30 inchers before.  Could you point me to them?
thanks

Thanks Jerry.  I noticed the file you linked to includes information on a 30" version.  Many people purchasing a display like this will have a calibration device.  That said bundled with a hood it makes Samsung's package quite good value assuming it can deliver on the specification.

When Apple update/replace the current line of cinema displays they could do worse than source similar LED panels.
