Software for Barrel Distortion
« on: January 05, 2008, 10:23:21 am »

I recently purchased a fish-eye lens and while I'll want the barrel distortion for effect on some shots, I'll want to minimize it on others. I use LR 1.3 for most everything, then roundtrip to CS3 for tweaks and back to LR for printing.

Is the built in CS3 correction now as good as anything else out there? I've looked at a few on line and $ isn't an object as much as just getting the best product that will be supported and around for a while.

I'm also looking at PTgui for panos; does it help with barrel distortion too?

Thanks!
Phil

Anything built on the PT (Panotools) source will handle lens distortion correction. You can try this out just by downloading Hugin (it is opensource).

Also check out DXO, it's raw conversion software, but with moduals for different camera/len combinations, and does an amazing job.  Wayne

Thanks! I did and for $15 figured it was worth having. It appears this will work well and if I find I need more, I'll look at sniper's suggestion - DXO.

Fisheye-Hemi from Image Trends is another option for correcting fisheye distortion.

I'd avoid DXO at present as their anti piracy protection seems to be causing a lot of problems.

I haven't had any problems with it, although it seems many of these photo software programs are starting to get intrusive with various bits of dare I say spyware?  Wayne

I'm not sure why it doesn't work.  Perhaps you can describe the problem or the particulars of your system.  The cameras you listed are supported by PTLens.

I tried it on
XPpro Sp2
dual AMD Opteron 280
4Gb Memory
74 Gb Scratch disk
Matrox card

In the stand alone version I see only jpeg's
In the plugin I can open 8 bit files but when I try to open 16 bits files I get direct an memory warning. I sent an email to Epaperpress but he don't know what to do about it.

Have you looked to see if there are new drivers for your video card?  The rest of the system seems to be fairly standard.

I installed the latest driver for the videocard.
80Mb is the maximum file size I can open with PTLens. So I can work in PTlens but 16 bits files are to big.

Interesting... I hope to test that this weekend.  I generally use PTLens first thing after my 16 bit RAW files come into CS3 from ACR.

You are right. It is the Matrox Parhelia DL256PCI card. If I remove the driver of the card there are no problems with PTLens.
What now? I have installed the latest driver but that isn't helping.
Btw I would never buy for a second time a Motrox card. It only gives problems. It is very expensive and I am wondering if you can see the difference with a much cheaper card for 2 monitors.

Several years ago I thought that Matrox video cards were the only way to go.  I think things have progressed to the point though that any decent video card suffices for my digital photography.  I currently use an nVidia GeForce 7300 LE.  It came with my Dell and seems to drive my two monitors sufficiently.

The sad thing is that video cards these days are built mostly for gamers.  Almost all the reviews of video cards are from the gamers perspective and don't apply to what we do.

So most of you use PTlens, and nobody CS3 for this kind of correction?  Why?

Because it's more or less automatic. It has built-in profiles for the distortion characteristics of most common lenses. I usually just start the plugin, accept the default settings, and I'm done.

Far quicker, easier and vastly more intuitive to use.
