Epson 3800
« on: December 29, 2007, 05:02:34 pm »

Unpacked my new Christmas gift (Epson 3800). Getting all the tape off was the hardest part. Have the printer up and running. Prints looks good color wise, no smudging or pizza marks. So far have used only Epson Premium Luster paper. When printing A3 size prints (actual print area around 10x15 inches), I notice a not too loud clicking noise when the print head reaches the leftmost point and begins to return.

I am printing at 1440, turned bi-directional off. I tried setting the platen gap to wide to see if the noise went away. No change. As stated earlier, the noise isn't too loud, but not having owned one of these before or ever heard one operate, I don't know if this is normal. Will call support on Monday and have them listen, but was just looking for some feedback in the meantime.

By the way, thanks to everyone on the forum as the posts on this printer and a variety of other topics has been very helpful.

Hope everyone is having / has had a great holiday season.

My 3800 does this, too, about half the time. Doesn't seem to have any effect on anything. I've just learned to ignore it.

If Epson tells you it's some serious problem, you'll let me know, right? <grin>

Thanks for the reply. Since my output looks great, I'm questioning whether this is really a problem. It's nice to hear at least one other person indicate they hear this noise too. I will certainly post the results of my call - one way or the other.

Mine makes the same noise printing 17" sheets, I think it's a limit switch for the head.

Are you aware of Eric Chan's information site on this printer?

Everthing you wanted to know about the 3800.

Yes, I think Eric's site is wonderful. I didn't see anything about the clicking noise in there, but there was a lot of other good information that I have read.

Yes, my Epson 3800 (purchased in September 2007) does produce those clicking noises, too, when the print head returns from its left-most position---at any print size. I was a bit nervous at first but then, like 'k bennett,' I learned to ignore it. It seems to be just normal for this printer model.

Does the noise sound like some moving object in the printer lightly slapping some other object in the printer?  If so, then I get the same noise sometimes.

My 3800 only seems to make that noise when I've been printing more or less continuously for an hour or so.  Maybe the tolerances change when it gets warmer than usual?
