HP Pro Satin - Any good 44" rolls out there?
« on: December 29, 2007, 02:00:52 am »

I have yet to purchase a usable roll of HP Professional Satin in the 44". I've received replacement rolls directly from a person at HP media. (Saved my butt, couldn't have printed my last two shows without his help.) HP knows there are issues and are working on them but I still need more paper on a regular basis. It's the best paper for my work, I've tried a lot of other papers but nothing has the same surface, color gamut and zero gloss differential as this paper on the z3100.
Has anyone had luck purchasing good 44" rolls of this paper?

What are the problems with the rolls that you get?

They have defective coating stripes running the length of the rolls. Very obvious defects. Like Doug, the only rolls I got that were not defective were direct from HP media and sent as replacement rolls.

As Jim stated, it's a surface coating defect. It's barely noticeable when unprinted but as soon as you put ink on it you can see a definite glossy stripe or stripes. Some might think (as I originally did) that this was a printer issue like roller marks. It mimics the roller marks somewhat but is slightly wavy and has different widths next to each other.
This was talked about quite a bit in another post: http://luminous-landscape.com/forum/index....topic=16983&hl=

Since I haven't heard from anyone about this I'm assuming no one is using 44" Satin on this forum. Seeing as it's the best paper I (and many others) have used on the z3100, I'm surprised no one has tried the 44" rolls. If you have and haven't seen the defects, please let me know where you got your paper. I'm desperate to find more.
Thanks, Doug

Just a stupid question-
Are these defects perpendicular to the direction of paper travel through the printer, or parallel? I ask this because the most annoying "feature" of the Z3100 in my experience is its tendency to go brain-dead when the heads need cleaning or ink is running low. Printing slows way down, and the print-head starts wiggling back and forth before each printing pass trying to orient itself. The resulting prints tend to display a few narrow bands of altered reflectance, as if the gloss enhancer was missing, running across the width of the page (i.e. perpendicular to the paper's path through the printer). At least for me doing a head cleaning or replacing any low ink cartridge seems to solve the problem, though only after I've wasted a big piece of paper. I've seen the same problem on HP Pro satin, Epson premium luster, and Harman gloss FB AL.

The defects run the entire length of the roll and so are obviously manufacturing problems.   The paper has the best color gamut and there are images I have which are impossible to print on the epson 9800 with any paper out  there but can print on the HP Z3100 with professional satin.  I found this to be most pronounced  in the blue range.

I also would like to find a source for good 44 inch rolls.

Do the defects only show up on the 44" rolls?

So far, I've only had defective 44" rolls. I've gone through 6 rolls of 24" from several different vendors/locations and all were good. The opposite is true for the 44" rolls, all were bad.

Just talked with my contact at HP media group. He said the supply line should be good now so it's safe to purchase 44" rolls and expect no defects. I guess I'll soon find out.

I have to add that HP has been very helpful regarding this issue. Don't know of too many companies that would write me back to keep me informed on this issue. They also have sent me good replacement rolls twice now and inspected them for quality before sending them, with no questions asked and no hassles.

Doug

Please let us know if you've gotten a good 44" roll!

How do you find someone at HP to talk about problems like this? I spent hours on the phone being bounced all over the place and got no information.

Thanks

Someone from HP contacted me (and another poster) after reading this forum.
