Canon IPF6100 with small thick stock cut sheets?
« on: December 28, 2007, 04:20:54 am »

I've seen the subject of Canon's notorious front feed system covered a few times in the canonipf wiki but, I didn't see anything mentioned on the following...

I have a sample pack of Hahnemuhle paper (8.5"x11" sheets_ and I'm noticing that this printer seems to have a propensity for chomping on the leading edge of the sheet if you feed it manually (since there's no other way with sheets). I figured that using the front feed system would solve that problem so I selected POP Board and when through the motions only to find out that it doesn't have a setting for 8.5"x11". I put it in there anyway and got the printer online and when I went to print (in this case with Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Satin) it threw up some error about not supporting that paper type with the front feed. GRRRrrrrr...

Is 8.5x11 with thick stock like this just not an option?

Cheers, Joe

Hi Joe,

Sorry to sound like a dummy, but where exactly is the front feed and how do you use it?  All I've managed to find on my iPF6100 is the single-sheet feeder up at the top.  And that was a real pita to figure out, especially with most of the sheet sizes being listed TWICE - once for portrait and once for landscape.  (And that's not talking about the orientation of your image either!)

Anyway, I did use some 8.5" x 11" paper from the single sheet feeder and was disappointed at the huge size of the unprintable margins with that.  I have a lot of Epson Enhanced Matte paper in different sheet sizes I wanted to use up and the print quality and the color accuracy (using the new Canon Premium Matte icc profile) is really very good.  But I guess I'll end up using those sheets on my Epson 2200.  I might buy a roll of the Epson paper for my iPF6100 though as I really like the paper and the results.

From what I've heard, the biggest beef about the iPF6100 among users is the poor support for anything other than roll paper.  It seems the available settings for anything else leave much to be desired.

Cheers!

Oh, one more thing...

So far my favorite paper IS the Hanhnemuhle Photo Rag.  I'm using it in 24" rolls and it's the 188 version.  It seems the thicker one (308 or something like that) isn't avaiable any more from Canon.  Using the new profile Canon released (on their Digital Learning Site) I'm extremely pleased with the results.

I'm not aware of a Hanhnemuhle Photo Rag "Satin" paper... is that really what the paper you're using is called?

Where do you get your paper?

I don't know about the iPF6100, but for the iPF5000 there are two manual settings for some media types--Manual and Manual (3 mm margins).  For example, premium matte media type has the 3 mm margin setting available.  Be sure to check that you are using the 3 mm margin setting if it is available for your media type.  See also:

Right on... same deal for the 6100. Depending upon the driver you're using it can be a bit buried in the UI but the option is there on the 6100 for both the Mac and the PC.

As for Photo Rag Satin... Shades of Paper has it..

You can also get a sample pack from them that has it as well if you want to compare with the others.

First bang your head up against the wall. Then select "POP Board" as the media type. Once you do that it'll open up the pinch rollers on the front and you can just feed a sheet into the front of the printer. To align the print you have to use the little lifty guide thingies and align the front edge of the paper to them. On a gracefulness scale of ballerina to Tasmanian Devil (of the Warner Brothers variety) this is definitely in Tasmanian Devil territory. Seems like it was an afterthought to me.
