Lightroom + 5D + Leopard + want TETHERING :)
« on: December 21, 2007, 11:39:11 am »

This is not a direct issue about LR, but rather something I would like to do while using LR.

Note that I am a past Capture One Pro user which I used to TETHERING with my 5D until Leopard came along. Short story, I converted to LR 2 months ago I am happy

I do some macro photography and will love to be able to TETHER one way or another while I have my camera mounted on a copy-stand.

Question: Is there any creative way that someone like me (configuration wise) could achieve implementing a TETHERING system. Perhaps someone here has done it aready

I figure the LR section will be my best bet for this question..

Yes,

I actually have his book (Martin Evening) on Light-room and a detailed explanation of his set-up. However EOS Viwer utility doe snot support the 5D, beats the heck our of me why ???

That is why I am look looking for any apps that would capture and place file in any folder. Then I can follow his instruction on how to automatically retrieve these files into LR.

Thanks for the effort!

Perhaps I spoke to soon,

There seems to be a use comment with a claimed work-around. I will try this over the weekend and see what happens.

----- here is the text of the probable work around ------

Thanks for describing this method of shooting directly into LR. I did have a real struggle to find the Canon Viewer software that you describe. I am shooting with a Canon 5D and I think that the software is not combatible with the 5D. Canon do not give the option to download Canon Viewer for this camera, so I think that we are stuck with Image Browser.

I know this thread is a little old now, however to answer eclic, the following is how I manged to set up shooting tethered with Image Browser on a 5D. This seems to work with my set up and is ultimately very similar to Martin’s steps. Martin I hope you don’t mind me sharing…

Step1
Tether camera and turn camera on.
(Canon camera window will auto open)

Step2
Launch Image Browser
Click the Canon camera icon which will launch Camera Window DSLR
Click remote shooting and then choose/create folder for images to be saved into through the canon software.

Step3
No need to quit any canon software.
Launch LR. – Under Preferences and import, check enable auto import, choose the folder you set up previously in step 1, and also under auto import settings, select a shoot folder within LR. This is where the image will ultimately be saved in. Also set any other meta etc.

Denis,
Doesn't EOS Utility work with the 5D? I tether using this program from the 30D with no issues (bar speed, it's a bit slow).

I need to double check, but I am pretty sure I used eos util. with my 5d. I am just now seeing if LR will tether with my macbook/leopard/5d.
Will let you know if I am successful.

snapback,

If you can get a tether system going (whichever way) with a 5D+Leopard, you will be my Hero

I have Win XP SP2, LR1.3.1, EOS + DPP, and Canon 5D....tethered no problems.

From the Lightroom Getting Started PDF page 24:

1 Choose File > Auto Import >
Enable Auto Import.

2 Choose File > Auto Import >
Auto Import Settings.

3 Choose a folder to watch using the Choose button. Note: You cannot choose an existing folder containing photos as a watched folder.

4 Choose a destination folder. It is a good policy to create a sub folder for each shoot so that the incoming images are grouped together.

5 Rename your images as they are copied to your Library. See page 11.

6 Select your Develop and Metadata presets from the pull-down menu. See page 12.

7 Apply any keywords you wish
to incorporate as you import.

See page 13.

8 Select Render Standard-Sized Previews to have Lightroom render previews of the imported photos rather than only using the embedded previews in the photo files. Your thumbnails and loupe previews will now reflect the chosen develop preset settings instead of the camera generated settings.

9 Next follow your camera manufacturers instructions for setting up tethered shooting.

10 Choose the same folder you picked for Lightroom to watch.

11 Test fire a shot and notice it quickly load into your Library. To see only the images from the watched folder, use the Folders panel to select the destination folder you picked for your watched images.

Here is a video on how...

Great info:

I am a little puzzle as it was my understanding that EOS capture does not support the 5D.

I am however aware of the auto import function. I will give this a try. The first thing is to make sure the DPP and EOS capture software is available in Leopard.

THX!!!!
