Zeiss/Sony 24-70 Vario-Sonnar f/2.8 SSM
« on: December 19, 2007, 08:05:23 pm »

Here are some spyshots about the upcoming Zeiss/Sony Vario-Sonnar 24-70 f/2.8 SSM (SSM = USM in Canon-speak), timed to arrive when they would be introducing their FF camera (A900) next month.

Rumors have it that there is either a Zeiss Vario-Sonnar 16-35 f/2.8 SSM or a Vario-Sonnar 14-24 f/2.8 SSM, along with a Zeiss 70-200 f/2.8 SSM Vario-Sonnar also to be introduced during early 2008.  A couple of Zeiss primes (wide) will supplement the current Zeiss Planar 85mm f/1.4 and the Zeiss Sonnar 135mm f/1.8 in their range.

This should roil the waters a bit in the dSLR landscape, since these lenses (being a Zeiss with full metal body and even the lens hood being Aluminium) are supposed to have mindblowing performance, corner to corner.

Yeah, it looks like Sony is making some good moves.  I have the Zeiss 85mm 1.4 for the A700, and it definitely rivals my Hasselblad Zeiss' in both IQ and build quality, but with autofocus to boot.

Following up on the recent release of Nikon's amazing 14-24 2.8 and 24-70 f2.8, this will leave Canon lagging behind pretty bad in terms of high quality wide angle shooting.

If Sony manages to include their in-body vibration reduction technology on a FF sensor, they stand a very good chance to become a serious contender in the high end market.

Cheers,
Bernard

I think Sony will quietly move toward a lens-based stabilization on their longer lenses (70-200 f/2.8 etc) and retain the body-based system calibrated to operate when the mounted lens does not have stabilization.

Also, Sony already announced that the technical limitations in including the body based stabilization with FF have been solved.  Whatever that means.  Time will tell

I saw several hundred pictures taken on the CZ 85mm f/1.4 and was very impressed.  Seemingly, the 135 mm f/1.8 has even better quality and if they introduce a FF camera as expected, it will be the perfect lens for portraits.

I held both the 85 and the 135 in my hands.  The Carl Zeiss 135 is a MASSIVE piece of glass and heavy to boot (in a good way) and the CZ 85 is relatively small in comparison.

Any pictures of the CZ 70-200 f/2.8 SSM? How about the 14-14 SSM? I couldn't find them. Hope they are announced in January jsut before the PMA show in Vegas.  I just might pick up a A700.

Also have you (or any one else) seen any video clips for the current G series 70-200?
