Mamiya AF 35mm, 45mm or 55mm?
« on: December 18, 2007, 03:57:22 am »

I need to get something wider than the 80mm kit lens, but I'm bit apprehensive about the 35mm due to potential lens cast issues on a P25.  Every now and then I see a cast from the 80mm lens.  Most of the time it's subtle and easily hidden with a WB tweak, but every so often there is one that really bugs me.  I created a bunch of LCC profiles and they work so-so.

I originally planned to get the 35mm F3.5 AF, but if it has lens case issues on a routine basis, then it's not the right lens.  I like that the 45 & 55 are F2.8 (brighter viewfinder).  Ultimately it comes down to sharpness, contrast and overall image quality.

For those who have shot with 35, 45 and 55 - any recommendations or suggestions?  Thanx.

I'm owner of the 35mm f3,5 and the 55mm f 2,8.

They are not exceptionnal, and not optimized for a digital use.

They present distorsions in the corners for the 35mm, and chromatic aberrations for both of them.

Some other Mamiya lenses are really better.

Thank you.  With the occasional lens cast from 80mm F2.8 AF I wondered if the wider lenses would be a problem.  The earlier Mamiya rumor thread said a new 45-90 zoom was coming (a new "D" lens).  That may end up being what I go with it.

Son has suggested the Hasselblad 50mm F4 CFI.  It's expensive and completely manual (stop down metering).  I don't mind manual focus, but the stop down metering gets on my nerves when shooting handheld.

Son knows his lenses, I just want to be cheap!

See my remarks re the 28mm on a different (current) thread,,,,

I find the 45 mm very balanced to handle, bright and with very good resolution. I have not tested it side-by-side with anything else but it is my most used moderate wide angle. I do not have the 55 mm because I have the 55-110 zoom - which is not as sharp at 55 as the 45 is.

Although I have most of the Mamiya AF lenses, my favorite traveling (landscape) outfit is the 28, 45, 75-150 and the 300 APO. Covers pretty much everything, and if one doesn't have exactly the length needed, one can go wider and crop - which is a good reason to use the P45+.

Bill - which back are using the with 45/2.8?  I'm curious to know if lens cast is a common problem.  I could just as easily shoot with a 45 as a 35.  I'd like to try the 28mm, but at $4k it will have to wait for quite awhile.

I'm using the P45+ and have not seen any lens cast with the 35 or 45 mm lenses, or indeed the  28mm. (Probably because it is specifically made for digital.) Mind you, as I do only outdoor landscapes I'm not sure whether a cast would be very evident. I have never felt the need to use Phase's white plastic "lens cast compensator".

An email received today from Capture Integration mentions the new zoom lens being 40-75mm.

That makes more sense given the 75-150's introduction.
