Lightroom 1.3 CPU use
« on: December 17, 2007, 09:10:14 pm »

Hi

I've seen this mentioned in other posts but have never seen a decent answer...

I have 26 web images inported into LR, each 250k. So, it should be a breeze to work with. Problem is, after reasonably quickly generating thumbs and minimal previews, the LR share of the CPU is chugging away at 50%, whether LR is focussed or minimised. It's been like that for a while now...

Any ideas why it should be like this and not 'dormant' when I'm not doing anything? I can't imaging what it could be doing in the background with so few small images.

XPSP2, 2GbRAM. LR1.3

Tx

ps After another look it's something to do with the Web Module. I have only 2 images selected so the web preview comes up quite fast but the CPU remains on 40-50% after I have visited the Web module, regardless of what I do until I shut the app down.

You probably have it set to auto update metadata, which it is doing until it's done.

If you mean 'Automatically write changes into XMP' then no, it's not checked. Besides how much metadata can there be in 26 tiny files.

Thanks for the thought, but I don't think it's that...

OK, I removed all the images, relaunched LR and went to Web module with no images in LR at all. Different web styles use different CPU amounts at first but they all settle to between 15 and 40% CPU use. When back in Library mode with no images the CPU remains active at 15%-40%.

OH - yo mean ALL you have in there are 26 little files?  Hmmmm....are you really still on 1.3?  Try going to 1.3.1 if so, see if it changes.  If you deselect the web module, does it stop?

OK, I'll try 1.3.1.

No it doesn't stop if I de-select Web module. It stops is I don't go to Web but once having been there the CPU keeps on keepin' on.

1.3.1 has definitely fixed some of the problems I was having. Now LR only crashes once every day or so instead of once every five minutes or so...

I can live with the once a day.

How exactly does it crash?  I have had it be quirky, but no version has crashed on me yet...I work in it daily, have over 20,000 images in the catalog...

"Lightroom has experienced a problem and needs to close"

To say that it crashed every 5 minutes is being generous. It may well have been even worse than that. It was so unworkable that until 1.3 and 1.3.1, I had gone back to using DPP and left LR alone.

That is definitely not the norm.  I would say there is something else causing that, not lightroom.   I might suggest redoing your machine to clear everything out.

I'll admit that it seems strange as I have LR1.1 on my laptop and have never had an issue. Stranger yet is the fact that the pc with the problems is a purpose built unit. When I received it, it had nothing on it but a fresh copy of Windows. That's it. I installed DPP, PSCS2 and Firefox. To this day, there are only a few more programs on it, but they were added long after the crash issues started which was immediately.
At one point, I switched around my desktop to classic view, and thought that had solved the problem to no avail. I installed 3.0 and 3.1 at the same time and the crashing has subsided to once a day.

It is certainly possible that something else was/is causing the conflict and that it is coincidence that it is now better.

I think I've figured it out. The coincidence may well be related to the NVIDIA Desktop Manager program. At the same time as installing 1.3.1, I profiled my monitor. Before profiling, I disabled the Manager program and didn't re-enable it after profiling.

Based on another thread in this forum, and on the tech posts from Adobe, that is what would seem to have been causing my issues. I have been working extensively in LR since then and have had very few crashes, although they do still happen on rare occasion.

I also had LR crash on me on my old computer.  But on that computer other programs would crash like Windows Media Player, etc.

I'm now running a new computer and nothing is crashing at all.  Maybe go through and update all your drivers?  I never figured out the issue with my old computer I just lived with it.

I am now positive that the NVIDIA program was causing the issues as I was also having a problem with crashes any time I tried to display streaming video full size. That problem also disappeared when I turned off the NVIDIA Desktop Manager.

Way back  when version 1.0 was released Nview caused major headaches, so I'm not surprised to hear you had an issue with NVIDIA software. Congrats on solving your issue! If it were me, I'd be gluing my hair back in!
