Epson 2200 Stopped printing
« on: December 15, 2007, 02:02:14 pm »

I have a 2200 and 7600 printer, and am very satisfied with both. Two days ago I made several 13"x19" prints using the 2200 and photo black ink. Yesterday I swapped the photo black with mat black, to print some half letter size  note cards on mat paper. I could not get the printer to print. Nada, nothing happens. The red light on the printer beneath the ink drop remains lit, and I cannot recall if this is normal or not. I've swapped the mat and photo blacks several times, but nothing will print. When I go to the "Printers and Faxes" it says the 2200 is printing, but it is not. I also tried printing a nozzle pattern test page and that won't print either. I've shut down the printer and turned it back on, and rebooted the PC....no help!Any suggestions?
Thanks

Thanks. I unplugged the printer for a minute or so then tried printing. Still no luck. When you say "reinstall the printer" do you mean reinstall the driver from the CD?
Thanks for trying to help..much appreciated.

I think he means: uninstall the printer (from Windows Control Panel if you're on Windows; or whatever does the same on a Mac), and then reinstall the driver from the CD. or check the Epson website and download the latest driver.

If that doesn't work, a trip to the nearest Epson repair outfit may be needed. My 2200 has never quit in just the way you describe, but it did die a while ago with all of the ink lights flashing rapidly no matter what I did. The local Epson service guy did a pretty good overhaul for a couple hundred bucks and it has been fine ever since. I'm not quite ready to junk it for a 3800 yet.

Good luck.

On a Mac, just remove the printer from the printer list and turn the printer off. I have no idea on Windows but on a Mac you don't need to reinstall drivers. I would also try to see if the cartridge was correctly seated.

Dave,

What red light are you referring to here? On my 2200 the only lights are the following: (1) power light in the middle of the power button (steady when on but not printing, blinking when printing), (2) light in the middle of the paper feed button (comes on when there is a paper jam), and (3) the seven red lights that each sit directly in front of one of the ink cartridges. There are no lights (on my 2200) on or near either the roll-feed button or the ink-drop button.

If the red light is the one next to the black cartridge, then, since you have swapped the MK and PK a few times, it sounds to me as if the chips on the cartridges aren't making good contact with the contacts on the printer. If this is the case, and you want to take the chance, you might try cleaning those contacts with rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip (very carefully so as not to bend the contacts or get alcohol or lint into the ink nozzle. Take the cartridge out first and use a good light to see the contacts behind its socket.

I have not tried this myself, so I make no guarantees. But it might work, and if it does, it's less expensive than an overhaul. If this doesn't work, there may be something more seriously wrong.

Good luck!

It is NOT normal for the red light to be on.  On my 2200 there is a red light for each cartridge.  When the red light comes on it relates to a specific ink cart.   Does the light relate to the ink cart you just swapped or another one?

The red lights for each cartridge will flash when the ink is low, and glow steadily when the ink is ("officially") out in that cartridge. When one of the cartridge red lights is on steadily, you can't print anything until you change that cartridge. If you change the cartridge and the light is still on, either the cartridge isn't seated properly, or the cartridge chip is bad, or there is some communication error between the chip and the printer.

It could be the waste ink counter that needs resetting.
Turn power off.
Press and hold the paper feed and roll paper buttons and turn the power switch on.
Once the power light and paper light flashes twice and the other lights are flashing takes about 10 seconds, then release the paper feed and roll paper buttons.

The power, paper and ink lights will flash twice.
The waste ink counter has been reset.

Don't give up if it does not reset the first time. It can take several attempts to get the finger coordination right.
I hope this works.

I did what you said, Martin, and I am printing again. HOWEVER, I actually screwed up saying the ink light was constantly lit and it was pointed out that there is no light at the ink drop symbol. The light was the light cyan light telling me the cartridge was empty!!! I've had this printer for a long time and never made that stupid mistake. I guess the upside of this is I thought I may have to replace the 2200, and started looking into both a 2400 and 3800 with their K3 inks and superior B&W capabilities. I think I will upgrade to the 3800, sell the 2200 (with a ton of new ink...the 2200 is expensive to run compared to pro printers with larger ink tanks).
Thanks again to all who helped (embarrasing to make a simple error like an empty ink cartridge).

I'm so glad it worked out, Dave.

As for dumb mistakes, "been there, done that" many times.

Perhaps your unconscious mind was trying to tell you to trash the 2200 and go get a 3800.

I've been sorely tempted myself.

I moved up to the HP Z3100 although I still have the 2200 sitting here collecting dust.  I haven't found a local buyer yet.

NEWS FLASH! From an email I just received, for anyone else with Epson problems:
Quote
Hey I found a solution to the Epson 2200 problem you were talking about in a forum.

http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml

download that and use it to reset the counter, you have to right click the icon in the bottom right and reset protector, please let that guy know… it took me like 2 hours to find it and get it working properly….wouldnt know how to manually clean the tank would you??
The download is the (free) SSC Service Utility, which I have successfully used for a couple of years. My problem has been that the Epson Status Monitor often doesn't work on my PC (It seems to relate to conflicts with my HP Laserjet 1200 printer). So when I want to know how much ink I have left in each cartridge, I run the SSC Service Utility and press the "Refresh" button. This works every time.

The SSC Service Utility also has a resetter tab with options for checking or resetting the chip on any cartridge. I haven't used the resetter, but it might be helpful if a cartridge is full but the chip says it is empty.

The SSC is available at least for most smaller Epsons, at least through the 2400. The website lists all of the models covered.

I hope this helps somebody out there.

P.S. Does anybody know how to clean the waste tank on a 2200?
