photoacute studio - any experience
« on: December 14, 2007, 05:11:45 am »

I came across this software and noticed that Uwe Steinmuller at Outback Photo is now using it as a part of his workflow. I downloaded the trial version and have put (only) 3 images through it so far, but at present am not really happy with the output I'm getting.

All images were shot using a 5D on a tripod, and there were 6 shots for the software to work with. What I am finding at present is that although (in the best and most appropriate case) the software deos appear to reveal additional information I am not really convinced that the information generated is correct! One particular image of a stone gate post shows very fine tracery detail (I'll try to post a crop later) but it seems to me to suffer from oversharpening and the detail is somehow not believable. On another image the fine detail in the moss on rocks in front of a waterfall appears smeared.

It would be interesting to know if anyone else has tried this software and what sort of results you got.

Also, without going into the necessity or otherwise of the AA filter:) do any imaging specialists have a view on whether it's possible to pull additional information from a series of captures that are slihgtly offset when an AA filter is in use?

Thanks

Mike

I spent 20 minutes with the demo version (Mac OS X version). It crashed 6 or 7  times and results were similar to yours. I only tried with photos taken on a tripod and with different settings in PhotoAcute. I don't know if spending more time with this software would give me acceptable results.
So far, I'm disappointed.
