No "edit Original" from LR?
« on: December 13, 2007, 01:44:19 pm »

I've been using Lightroom to manage/edit and batch to low res, but I have been using the "Edit Original" option to open the files from LR in PS3 using Camera Raw plugin.

This works with my 1Ds files.

But now I go to produce the 1Ds III files and it won't give me the "Edit Original" option.  I only get the "Edit a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments" option.

What is up with that?  Do I need an update to LR?  I am currently running LR 1.3.1 and Camera Raw 4.3.1.

Perhaps you guys are using LR instead of Camera Raw for the conversion?  Do you find it to have more power?  Better conversions?

Maybe I need to learn LR for conversions instead.....

Comments please.

I see from the other thread about ACR 4.3 vs LR 1.3 that both converters are pretty much the same thing so why not open right from LR?

Plus it looks like I don't have a choice anyway so....

Hi Scott.
First of all I think you edit jpg´s when you get alternative to edit the original and now you try to edit a RAW-file, is that correct?
You're not supposed to be able to edit the original RAW-file thats the meaning with the whole "non destruktive" editing.

And yes the Develop module in Lightroom version 1.3.1 is the same as the CameraRAW 4.3.1 plugin. And those are the latest version as today.

You're really not doing any "conversions" until you deside to make a tiff or jpg of the RAW-file and thats when you choose "save" in Camera-RAW or open in Photoshop and then "save".
In Lightroom you do that when you choose to "Export" the file or as you mentioned "Edit a copy" in Photoshop.

Just Drag your raw image(s) to the Photoshop icon in the Dock - opens up in RAW just fine.
You will have to do a Save-As & re-import or set up a hot folder.

I think you are confused.  Edit Copy and Edit originals are not for use with RAW files.  Edit copy with adjustments has been the only option after altering a RAW in lightroom.  You are probably remembering editing tif, jpg or such.

This only work on the MAC-OS not in Windows.
Before you do this make sure you save the metadata edits to the file in Lightroom first.

I have a faint remebrance that edit original was supported in the early LR releases but I see it's not supported now. Takes away an easy way to use 3rd party raw converter.

Am I correct in remembering that or is my memory fading?

Fading maybe, I've a copy of V1.0 I keep for reference.. Edit Original and Edit a Copy are greyed out for RAW files.
