Platinum Rag anyone?
« on: December 12, 2007, 11:49:30 pm »

I find surprisingly little info online about this paper, which I just discovered - or previously ignored. Reviews, feedback or really any type of comments. Just several articles mentioning the paper ... all written by one editor. It sounds great on paper (sorry for the pun). I've ordered a sample for myself, but I'm curious to hear feedback from those who have tried it. I'm using only matte papers (by choice, although I do have a one-black 7880), so the MK luster possibility intrigues me. Anyone?

Jesse, are you talking about the PremierArt Platinum Rag?  If so there have been some other comments on the forums about this paper.  If it's the one Im thinking of, don't waste your ink....the paper is the worst stuff I've ever used and I mean that literally (this is my personal opinion).  It it is the paper by PremierArt that's bad,...not the company that's bad.  One of my favorite matte papers is the PremierArt heavy weight matte paper (very similiar to the Epson Ultrasmooth) which is a first class matte paper.  Very beautiful paper......eleanor

Premier Art Hot Press.  It's very similar to the Epson ultrasmooth but it comes in a heavier base than the roll version of the Ultrasmooth. Eleanor

I am curious about why it is considered so bad?  I bought a pack of it awhile back, for the same reasons - a luster finish with Mk ink - but have yet to sit down to profile it yet or even try it out.   I am wondering if I shouldn't waste my time (though I may have already wasted the money?).

For an alternative, Jesse you may want to try Hanemuhle's Photo Rag Satin - it also offers a  slight sheen to it after ink is applied and has a very nice feel in hand.   Not quite luster sparkle - but not flat matte finish either.    I use this one quite a bit.

I would definitely try it out. It may work for you. I know some like it.

I can't stand the paper texture and the way the ink settled on the paper - as a matter of personal taste. In my blue skies, it almost looked like I had dropped sand on the paper after printing - to give you a visual of how distracting it was for me. But the apparent resolution is very poor. Makes Photo Rag look incredibly sharp. In fact it pales next to a Photo Rag print - literally. It's too bad, because I really wanted to like this paper. On the plus side, it took considerable effort to smudge the ink ... and one spray took care of minimal gloss differential. It just doesn't match my needs/style.

Thanks for the tip Mark on PRS. I actually have not tried that one - and had overlooked the MK compatibility. I recently went all matte, and am loving life.
