Is this shot lackluster?
« on: November 30, 2007, 12:41:55 pm »

I am an amateur photographer with a whole lot to learn, so I thought I would submit an idea here and get some feedback.

I want to do a project that would archive and exhibit the story of barns in the rural area of South Carolina that are rapidly deteriorating.  Growing up in a rural area, tobacco barns in particular are indigenous and very much a part of the local heritage, so I think the project would be neat.

So when I have the time, I am out and about taking shots of barns in the area.  I took some of my first pics yesterday and I would like some feedback.  It was a gray overcast day, I couldn't manipulate dramatic light, but these 3 photos were my favorite.

Do these pics seem boring to you or it is just me. I worked with the lighting, sharpness, contrast, and cropping.

Camera is a Nikon D50, so im guessing thats why the resolution isn't great

thanks in advance

I like the composition of the first two shots, but the light certainly is uninspiring. Low evening sunlight for a fading piece of history might express things better, unless you want strictly "architectural" pix.

But I think you're on the right track! Keep trying,

Honest answer - yes pretty dull. There isn't anything wrong with your basic composition, its just that the tones are all over the place.

But for my money, you've taken exactly the right step in setting yourself a real worthwhile project as a way of developing your photographic skills and recording something important before it goes.

If you keep at it, you can look back every few months and amaze yourself with how far you've come. Also of course if you archive the original RAW files you can just rework them as your skills increase.

Two other quick points - first there is nothing wrong with a D50. Second, good black and white conversions take serious skill levels, think years rather than months - if you are serious about going that way, you will need good software. Photoshop is ultimately more capable, but Lightzone is much cheaper and much easier to understand. You'll need a dual core and lots of RAM to use it though.
