P30 samples at high ISO?
« on: November 27, 2007, 05:43:48 am »

I noticed that refurbed Phase One P30's can be obtained for £6495.00 now.  I have a project where this might be of use, but it requires shooting at 400ASA.

What is the performance of the P30 (not the plus version) at 400?  Is it usable at 800?

If someone has some samples available, preferably of subjects in available light rather than under studio conditions I'd be grateful if someone could share them with me to see if this might be a possible route to go down.

I just took delivery on one so I'll post a 400 iso jpeg for you in the next couple of days
Marc

Made them worse case 800 ISO (the P30 has microlenses so it's base iso is 100 and max is 800)
1st picture 100% crop, 800 iso, Capture one no noise reduction, no sharpening, no ETTR
[attachment=4048:attachment]
2nd picture same conversion, noise ninja and focus fixer

I'm impressed by the 800 ISO, although I'd like to see how it handles skintones. One question though, is the pic out of focus or is the P30 that soft? (I'm comparing it to my P25).

Ah, ok. If you have the possibility to post a portrait at 800 I'd love to see it. Thanks

I got my daughter to turn around in her chair (she usually makes faces when Pa wants to take a picture!)

Afternoon light from the sliding glass door, 120mm macro, C1 V4 beta, Portrait natural/Film standard, ISO 800 no sharpening or noise reduction in C1, jpeg.

100% crop no sharpening or noise reduction
[attachment=4070:attachment]

100% crop noise ninja/focus fixer
[attachment=4071:attachment]

Full portrait reduced in PS
[attachment=4073:attachment]

The camera, lens, back and Capture 1 are all new to me so if you have constructive criticism, please comment.

Thanks for this Marc, I'll peruse carefully. This 800 performance is actually not bad at all.

Nice photo.
