new (to me) epson 2200 and can't get a print
« on: November 24, 2007, 02:19:18 pm »

I've purchased a new to me (epson 2200) to print an archive of black and white prints I've taken....
I've done everything I can and still don't have one fine print.

The prints look perfect on my monitor, but when I print them they c ome out t wo values higher )lighter all across the print.....I can't tell you how many prints I've printed and still not one worth keeping....can someone tell me (basic - do it like this first...." or "follow this way, do this first"....

I'm frustrated and still don't have a beautiful print......I tried all the quad stuff some time ago and am back to just the epson 2200.....but can't get a p rint....I use an emac and photoshop CS2.

Im printing on  an Inkject Art Solutions paper that won't be my paper of choice....its too glossy.....or soft glossy.....is called Premiere Fine art Entrada M natural....I think........

Thanks,

Robbie Bell

Robbie,

Are you softproofing before printing?

I assume your monitor is calibrated and profiled.

If you are soft proofing and having these kind of problems then its possible that the profiles you're using for the printer/paper/ink just aren't very good.

I started delving into digital B&W with an Epson 1200 and an hextone(6)inkset from MIS about 5 years ago. It was a good learning experience and while I did get some good B&W, I felt it was lacking. Last year I moved up to a K3 printer and haven't looked back.
Unfortunatly, with the printer you have, you may not get what you may consider a true B&W print. While it may be a good printer, it is ancient by todays standards. Don't feel offended. My current printer was recently made old when Epson released a newer version.
If I'm not mistaken(I did not have the 2200)you only have one black ink. That means that the printer has to make up the tonality of B&W with colored inks. Next to imposible to do by todays standards. The more up date printers that people are using for their B&W are using multiple blacks in the inkset. Epson's printers that utilize their K3 inks(3 different blacks)are one such type of printers.  You may want to check out a Yahoo site that is dedicated to digital B&W.

I hate to say so also.  I have a 2200--and actually either toned my monos somewhat and used RGB (and still had metamerism) or used Quadtone--which you say you already tried---assuming it was with another printer.  It really was the best solution for me with the 2200 to combat the metamerism.

I bought a 3800 (K3 inks) a year ago and my mono prints are wonderful now (still assuming calibrated monitor, softproofing, profiles).  That's the best, but expensive solution for printing b$W or toned monos.   But--the 2200 does a very good job with the Quadtone system.

Not true. The 2200 has three black inks and uses two at a time (Matte and Light, or Photo and Light), and uses colors to fake the lightest tones.

I have found Quadtone RIP to give me excellent B&W prints on matte papers (mostly on Epson Enhanced Matte -- or whatever they're calling it this week -- and Epson Velvet Fine Art -- beautiful but expensive), but not so good on most glossy papers, where the problem is gloss differential (best results so far are on Ilford Galerie Gold Fibre Silk).

The newer K3 inkset certainly makes even better prints (both color and B&W), but the 2200 is not bad at all.

As I stated, I did not have the 2200, so I stand corrected!

Whoops, I should have caught that about the inks.  The number of blacks isn't the problem so much as metamerism.  Quadtone was the solution, as I said.  I got many mono prints I was happy with out of the 2200.  The K3 inks are a simpler, more versatile solution and since I do a lot of mono printing, a logical upgrade for me as my 2200 aged.  However--you should still be happy with the results from the 2200 on matte --I agree Epson VFA was my choice most of the time but gloss differential made semigloss a less than desirable choice--I never use glossy so have no knowledge.

I'm some times tempted to "accidentally" pour some coffee into my 2200 so I'll have an excuse to get a 3800, but She who Guards the Budget would know in an instant. Maybe by the time my 2200 actually dies there will be a nice 3880 available that takes both cut sheets and rolls.

Oooops,

Just posted this repy in the DIP forum.  Thought I'd repost here...

"Howdy,

I hate to say it but the 2200 isn't the best printer to be using for (easy) B&W prints. You could try using dedicated B&W inks and/or a RIP and see if that helps. Here's a link to a well respected and inexpensive RIP that also includes info about and links to dedicated B&W ink sources, etc.:

http://www.quadtonerip.com/html/QTRrequire.html

Also try this Yahoo group for all things related to B&W inkjet printing:

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/Digital...Print/messages/

You can go here for info on "black only" B&W printing with the 2200 (also a graet source of paper info):

http://www.cjcom.net/articles/digiprn3b.htm

Good luck! I hope you find a solution that works for ya!

Cheers!"
