Schneider 24mmApo Digitar and centre filter
« on: November 21, 2007, 12:39:07 am »

In a thread earlier this month  (   http://luminous-landscape.com/forum/index....opic=20677&st=0  ) Murray mentioned a colour cast which may have had something to do with the use of the centre filter on a 24mm apo digitar.

As I am looking to get one of these lenses I am wondering how are people working with them.  Are the centre filters useful or can they cause problems and is their use being replaced by software with the use of white shading files? I am currently using an eMotion22.

I have had a 24mm Apo Digitar for about 3 years. After I have started to use Brumbaer DNG Konverter I do not feel that I need a Centre filter anymore. With the centre filter I unnecessary sacrificed 2 stops. With eMotion 22 back two more f stops means I can use the 24mm handheld on a TC.

i noticed a tendency to overcorrect shots with very wide angles as the 28HR or the 24.
this can appear if you have monocrome and uniform colors as saturated blue skies, although the white shots look perfect.
it seems so that its an effect of in which the angle the light hits the sensor.
therefore brumbaer tools have now the vignetting control switchable.

if i have the impression i want lesscorrection i convert one file with vignetting on and one without .
( i have to write two seperate white files for this ). the two files can be layer than in ps and blended  with "live-preview".

I do not have center filter for a 24xl (not required for a Sinar or Leaf back..software can control density variations). The color casts are caused by the different light sources in the scene.
I have attached 2 gain files shot with an Aptus 22 one in a daylight scene the other in a fluorescent scene...other than the obvious color balance settings at time of capture, you can see how the sensor behaves  differently under different lighting conditions.
As per discussions in the referenced thread, the Sinar emotion w/ Brumbaer workflow is the best solution for wide angle and  discontinious light source shootings

David,

I am now shooting the wide lenses without centre filter and no problems. Brumbaer handles well.

David,

I did as well use the 24mm Digitar without centerfilter, but simply correcting by means of a white shading and the Brumbaer DNG Converter: no problem at all so far and excellent results.

Best regards,
Thierry
