Yes, many indeed - but you can't rush that which won't be rushed, or something like that, I think ...

Well i understand not being rushed but after a few weeks.. general impressions are nice to know. Of course I realize that opinions get refined with better and more complete testing. The problem is that a general impression sometimes gets transmitted as gospel so that when an opinion is altered or refined based on better data---one gets too much grief thereafter.

I too am waiting for the full in-depth report that Michael usually provides but at the same time I know and understand what it's like to be gone from a week to several months at a time.  There's a lot of catching up to do.

The above said, what I saw and immediately liked reading is

"As you may recall, I took a pre-production Canon 1Ds MKIII on this shoot. It performed flawlessly (my emphasis added). I will have a report and an ongoing article with many photographs in the weeks ahead. I also plan on having a new exhibition at my Toronto gallery before Christmas as well as at another gallery. Details soon. "

So with that little bit of detail I can wait for the full report .....

Performed flawlessly just means the camera was functioning properly but to me does not imply anything about the image quality

Image quality, let me be brave and say this, is also an objective quality. Awaiting anotherĀ“s report on that is meaningless; you have to accept that, at a certain level of instrument and instrumentalist, quality is a given and that it is then totally interpretation by yourself of whatever YOU choose to shoot, that counts. All else is a daisy-chain.

Well fine,  you were brave    - but quality is by no means a given. There are so many aspects of it and the track record is mixed even for first-rate equipment of many kinds. Having a competent experience report which goes into these factors is really valuable,  and for those who *can't wait* - what's the panic - the camera isn't even available yet and Canon has not announced a specific date. All we know is that it was anticipated for some time this month.

Check out the new site image from the 1Ds Mk III at ISO 1250, and with a tough subject at that. Adds some substance to the phrase "performed flawlessly", me thinks .

Michael, thank you so much for getting the report out that quick. These things are a PITB and we trully appreciate your efforts.

Nice image, but a D40 would do basically just as well at this image size (at least in terms of noise, not sure in terms of DR)...

This is not to say that the 1ds3 is not a great camera, but this web image says more about the photographer than it does about the camera IMHO.

Regards,
Bernard

Personally. I think Michael was using the diamond/lump of coal analogy when he said the camera performed flawlessly. It could have performed like a flawless diamond or it could have performed like a flawless lump of coal that he chucked on the fire and it burned well for five minutes. I am sure it was the latter analogy.....not.

I agree with you drew, but I would hate to be disappointed out of the review. I m really counting on this camera that it will perform the same or better than the RZ67 system I've just sold...the old film vs digital story...

I now plan on publishing the MKIIIs report at 6pm eastern today. Sorry for the delay.

Michael

Ps: It's not a lump of coal.

Michael
I find this new style of review so much more entertaining and enlightening than the old style of technical review. Sure, I'm curious to see your comparison with the MFDBs. But I know I'll probably stop reading it about half way through as my eyes glaze over and skip to the conclusion. On the other hand today's "blog" had me reading and re-reading certain sections. I'm sure I speak for most of us in thanking you for sharing your experience with an interesting camera in an interesting place.

This kind of report provides such excellent insight into what it's like to actually use the camera and what kind of results it is capable of delivering in competent hands. Really useful. I'd like to share with readers an anecdote from yesterday. I visited Luminous-Landscape Gallery and had a look at all the actual prints which appeared as web images in this report. Needless to say, all the photographs are very good, but what really impressed me most from a technical perspective is the image "Shy". The depth of field in that shot is narrow, but the portion that's in focus is REALLY in focus and the quality of the detail is astounding. One clearly sees in crisp detail the very fine red veins in the whites of her eyeballs as well as individual threads in the weave of her shawl, for those parts of it in focus. When you consider this was taken hand-held with a telephoto lens at ISO 400 and constitutes such a small part of the image, to me the resolving power of that sensor and lens combination is nothing short of remakable.
