Lightroom Sharpening
« on: November 12, 2007, 04:58:41 pm »

I am using the demo 1.2 version of lightroom and I only process jpegs.  (I don't have a camera that supports RAW.)

I have read in several places where folks are still using PS for "output" sharpening rather than LR.  Now LR1.0 only had one sharpening slider and it was for amount.  In Scott Kelby's LR book he suggests avoiding it and using PS instead for better control and results.

BUT, his book was written before LR version 1.2 (I surmise) because LR1.2 has four sliders that control sharpening, not just one.  It would certainly be nice not to need to export from LR to PS just for sharpening, so am wondering how folks feel about the new and expanded sharpening tools in LR.  And if you like it, what are some default settings that work for you.

Thanks for you thoughts.

The number of sliders does not help if you don't have the appropriate setttings, which plugs-in such as PK can provide, together with more sophisticated operations (such as taking into account edge structure).

Sharpening in PS gives you local control that is absent from LR. For instance, you may not want to sharpen the cloudless sky part of a landscape.

The sharpening control in lightroom are only for capture, not output.

What would be the difference.  If the LR sharpening changes the image (which it does when I see it a 100%), then won't this sharpening be apparent when posted to the Web, for example with pbase or smugmug?

Sorry... I'm new to this and know just enough to be scarey *grin*

I don't really feel like typing a book - so use search, google sharpening, or better yet just buy the LL From Capture to Print...
