Infrared flash?

When the sun is in the sky, there is lots of "light"  to make infrared images. But what to do when the sun goes down or when shooting indoors? So as not to startle the subject, would putting an infrared filter over a flashgun work or would there not be enough output to do the job? Are there dedicated infrared flashguns?

I don't know if it'll help. I've seen people use custom made LED flood lamps, built using IR LED's. If done well enough, apparently the result is very useable...

I've also seen people use LED's in LED flash P&S camera's for somewhat seedier purposes, but it does work to an extent.

In my military days we used IR flash for various purposes, this was with IR film (B+W) there was no visable flash, and a grainy but sharp B+W pic, if your digital camera is IR sensitive enough it should work.
We just used IR gel over the flash, mostly vivitar 282 if memory serves right
