P45+ Max ISO without streaking ?
« on: November 09, 2007, 01:27:30 am »

Hi guys,

I am happy with my P45+ up to ISO 400; ISO 800 seems to streak too much for C1 to compensate, particularly when underexposing.

Anyone here have better experiences with P45+, and able to underexpose for effective higher ISO ?

I am trying to make my mind up whether to complain or not - with Canon I once requested a sensor replacement for my EOS1Ds, and that gave me a much improved high ISO.

Bump. It's not the noise I am unhappy with, it's the streaking.

I'll ignore the obvious joke here.  Too easy...

Edmund, can you post a sample?

I have (rarely) used the P45+ at ISO 800 and while it is VERY noisy, I do not get any streaking. I use LR to process. I'll try some tomorrow and process in C1.

I have just tried a few shots at ISO 800 and processed in both C1 and LR. There is no streaking UNTIL I underexpose significantly- that is, at least one full stop. Can't complain at that.

I'd like to see an example of your problem....I wonder if you are expecting too much!

Hate to say it but does anyone feel a little ripped off by the plus backs? My P21 doesn't produce any more noise than that example. I love my P21 but the plus models are quite a bit more money and I just dont see the improvement, yes the screen is better (unless in daylight and when else do you use the screen?) and there only .1 second faster or something similar. It would be nice to see some sort of progress.

I never owned a non+ back.  I know that I would never shoot at ISO 800.  I do take a lot of long exposures and have heard that the plus is better.  Here is a link to long exposures.  The freeway panorama was 2 minute exposures.  I always shoot at ISO 50 or 100.
But for me the fact that the screen was crappy on the p45 made me wait to purchase until the + came out.

I bought a P45+ back about a year ago and was given a loaner P45 until last September when the P45+ for Mamiya was delivered to me. The biggest differences for me are (1) the screen is quite superior (2) ISO 200 is very usable and (3) it is appreciably faster.

I too never shoot at 800 (though if you want only 11 by 14s it's OK) but ISO 400 is pretty good - not as good as my 1ds II and certainly not as good a the 5D, but eminently usable if you gotta!

I wouldn't say "ripped off", because I knew what I was getting before I went in...

Coming from Canon small format, none of these backs are good at "high" ISO (800 isn't all that high any more on cameras like the D3)...

Would I like better high ISO performance?  You betcha.  But for now I will have to be content with ISO 50-200.  In this range the backs are delivering the goods for me.

I've got a p20 and it definitely produces more noise than that - won't even dare post a sample. So don't feel ripped off. I think the + backs are faster from shot to shot and are useable one stop higher ISO.

It seems to me like a p21 would not be as noisy because the 100% crop is half the resolution as a p45.  If I did a same sample image at 50% it would probably look like your p21 at 100%.  IMO

My P21 hardly has any noise at ISO 200 and it's fast and it doesn't have any high iso weirdness and the screens not great but you can see it outside and it was cheap as chips (comparatively)
