Eye-Fi WiFi SD card
« on: October 30, 2007, 02:03:43 pm »

Okay, file this one under shooting technique. After skimming through my daily list of blogs I came across this new card (out today). Aparently you can send your files to FTP and computer. Sounds like loads of untethered fun. Would anybody consider this an option?

Eye-Fi, a California-based company, announced this morning what they say is the world's first wireless SD memory card for digital cameras. The 2GB card, which will retail for around $99, is said to make it possible to send photos wirelessly from a digital camera to a Wi-Fi-enabled Mac or PC using wireless networks (also known as "hot spots"). The card works with any current SD-compatible camera, and will automatically upload photos onto pre-selected social networking sites or on-line photo labs when the camera is turned on. The feature, if it works as promised, could very well save photographers time spent uploading images to computers and then to web sites. The card is expected to be available immediately.

I just called the Eye-fi - they do not support RAW files and have no plans for it for the future. This would save the Mamiya ZD users from the faulty firewire connection.

Yeah, I checked that out. It appears as if the product is in beta, IMO. But this is definitely a solid begininng. I guess it was too much to ask for pro features at this price point but hopefully enough people will provide some feedback and make the next iteration something that we'd all go out and buy.
Probably the biggest feature it lacks now is RAW support. Next would be write speeds.

What am I missing, why do they need to deal with raw or .jpg or anything, it would seem to me they can just stream out the contents of the card and let the capturing computer figure out what it needs to do.

I got the Eye-Fi card for Christmas. It works as advertised in my Canon compact (SD700IS) but it does not work in my Canon 1Ds Mark II, even with JPEG images. Here is what I wrote to Eye-Fi tech support and what they said:

Does the Eye-Fi card work with Canon's professional models? The 1Ds Mark II and 1Ds Mark III specifically. They have a SD card slot (as well as a CF card slot).

I tried on my 1Ds Mark II and got a card error and the format of the card was corrupted. The camera battery had to be removed to clear the error.

The same Eye-Fi card works on my Canon SD700IS compact.

Good Morning, Paul,

The Eye-Fi Card is compatible with most Canon SD format model cameras.  All cameras "to date" have not been tested and confirmed to work with the Eye-Fi card, though.  After reading the problem you encountered with your Canon 1Ds Mark II, and seeing that the Eye-Fi Card worked with your Canon SD700IS, I would conclude that the Eye-Fi Card is not going to work with your Canon IDs Mark II.  I apologize for that.

Have a wonderful day,
Wanda

From that response it doesn't sound like they are going to leap into action to debug the problem and issue a firmware revision for compatibility with the 1Ds2. Oh, well.

Robert, what you're missing is that the Eye-Fi is designed mainly to upload your images directly to a photo-sharing web site like Flickr. Uploading to your own computer seems to be a bit of an afterthought. Since the photo web sites generally don't accept raw images, the main feature can't easily handle raw images.

There's no particular reason why they couldn't add support for raw images for local upload only, except that the larger file sizes would make the wireless uploads slower. I don't expect this is a high priority for them, though. It's outside the main focus of the product.

From what I see that cheap device would be great for shooting Raw on CF card and Jpeg to SD card

Canons own wireless  solution is 10 times the price - and on the show I have attended ( for 1 Ds Mark III )they were using this
combination meaning that transfering 21 megs RAW is probably painfully slow ..

Anyone aware about Eye -FI working with 1 DS MArk 3  ??

I used the eye-fi for two weeks now with my 1Ds III. It works. I set the camera to store RAWs on CF and small JPEGS on the eye-fi SD-card. A small JPEG (1.3 MB) takes 1 to 2 seconds to appear on my Laptopscreen.

I connected the eye-fi via wlan-router to my laptop. Setting up the system is very  easy. But I have to be close to with my wlan-router in my studio (10-12m). So the next step will be to buy a USB2.0-WLAN-AP-stick (as access point) for my laptop to be connected to the camera on location. I will report here when I have more experience about this.

Mahias, It sounds really interesting .
Specially because of some other people with bad experience around similar setup ...
Is there some software update that made it possible ?

Are you on Windows or Mac ?
Get us more details please :-) !
