Dbl sided for calendar paper?
« on: October 19, 2007, 11:35:14 am »

Each year I make a calendar of some of my aurora shots from http://www.pbase.com/santa/aurora . I send them to family, friends and a few clients. Up till now I have used Shutterfly but each calendar is $20 before shipping from them. I'd like to reduce the cost to my friends and to myself and may print them myself this year with my iPF5100. I'm looking for a recommendation for double sided paper that is suitable for calendars - heavyweight and reasonably stiff, available on roll or 17x22 sheets, neither full glossy nor matte. Barring that option, any other recommendations for good calendar making printers is welcome. Shutterfly does a decent job for short runs of the 50 or so calendars I do but I'm always looking around at options and a way to save everyone some money.

It's not *exactly* what you're asking for, but might be useful to know about if you can't find exactly what you want...

I made double-sided calendars every year for family and friends too, and what I use is inkjetart's Premium Duo-Brite Matte paper.  It's a fairly thick and reasonably stiff double-sided matte paper; I know that you'd prefer paper that isn't fully matte, but I find that this surface works very well for writing on (for people like me who make notes on their calendars).  It's also quite inexpensive compared with most papers, but it still looks quite good for a matte paper.  (If you'd prefer slightly less expensive still, they have two slightly cheaper non-premium varieties of the Duo-Brite Matte, but the Premium has slightly better Dmax and is only slightly more expensive, and I think it may also be slightly thicker.)  It comes in 17"x22" (though I use the 13"x19", personally); not sure about rolls.

You can find it at inkjetart.com.  inkjetart also has numerous sample packs of various papers so you can try several, which is how I originally decided on this one.  Caveat:  I use Epson printers, so no guarantees that it will work well with your particular printer, but that's what sample packs are for.

I've used the heavier weight of Photo Rag Duo for this in the past and the results were very nice (tons better than any of the online labs), but the cost per page probably isn't much cheaper, if at all, because that paper isn't exactly cheap.

I use the innova high white smooth duo for wedding albums, 225gsm may be a bit light but it works well bound. Again maybe a bit expensive as it's cotton, btu ti is nice. Not seen it in roll form though.

Depends on what you're aiming for. Printing on your own inkjet, once you add in labor and depreciation costs, won't save you much money. If you're willing to compromise a bit on quality, you can have a calendar printed for you by a service bureau using something like a big Xerox color laser system for a lot less. One local digital lab prints a calendar for me on such a system with a fully color managed workflow, for $7 a copy. Quality isn't quite as good, but you can't beat the price and convenience.

I think Ink Jet art has double sided Micro ceramic luster.  Micro ceramic luster duo I think.  Of course at the price you'll pay you're better off getting it printed for you.
