Photo location suggestions around Santa Fe
« on: October 08, 2007, 06:46:06 am »

Hi everybody,
My wife an I will be going to Santa Fe for our first time during the first week of November. We will be there for 5 days. Any special photographic locations I should be aware of? Any desert areas? Strange rock formations? Any other "must sees"?

Thanks for any and all help.

Santa Fe itself has numerous photogenic adobe buildings and a beautiful Cathedral. Lots of classic 'hanging chilis' shots around town.
Also check out the Rio Grande river valley, about 45 miles north. There's a thoroughly spectacular overlook tucked out of sight at the back of a suburban-looking cul-de-sac; it's really worth the trip.

Hi Jerry,

If you are looking for cool rock formations I'd suggest Kasha Katuwe - Tent Rocks National Monument on the Cochiti Pueblo between Santa Fe and Albuquerque. Also, near the village of Abiquiu is Plaza Blanca (aka the White Place) which gets few visitors and is very interesting.

How far are you willing to drive? I'd be happy to suggest more locations.

Best,
Adam

Just north of Abiquiu (but south of Ghost ranch) is Red Rocks, highly recommended place to spend a few hours photographing.

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions! About an hour radius is about all I have time to do, especially if I do something for sunrise/sunset. Any thoughts on sunrise/sunset locations? Geoff: where is that cul-de-sac?

Also, has anybody ever done the Dixon Studio Tour?

Sounds like you got some good advice on locations. But don't miss out on great food. My personal favorites (one that tourists don't know about):

Los Portillos
1947 Cerrillos Rd
Santa Fe, NM 87505
Wk: (505) 992-0550

Don't miss the green chili cheesburgers here:
Bobcat Bite
Las Vagas Hwy
Santa Fe, NM 87501
Wk: (505) 983-5319

Only open Wed-Sat!

Thanks, Jerry! Plaza Blanca is north of Abiquiu. To get there take US 84 west past Abiquiu (going towards Ghost Ranch) and turn right onto County Road 155. Go 2.3 miles on 155 and then turn left onto a bumpy road. This road eventually forks, take the right fork to reach the car park. From here you can walk down into Plaza Blanca.
