What is the difference?
« on: October 04, 2007, 06:58:48 am »

Hello to all,

I would like to know whether there is some delicate difference between the two topics/subjects/phrases mentioned below:

"Digital Image Processing" and "Digital Image Editing"

And how does these two differ from "Digital Image Analysis".

I know for many people this may appear  as a silly question, but recently we had  some confusion and  arguments  in a seminar regarding the delicate differences between these three topics so i am seeking clarifications from the experts in this forum.

Can we draw some boundary lines between the three and if so how distinct  or blurry it is? or does we have too much of overlap so that we can not draw any boundary at all.

Any clarifications with examples are welcome and thanked greatly

Processing and editing are pretty much interchangeable terms for what happens between capture and printing. Analysis is measuring or quantifying various attributes of an image.

I would agree with Jonathan.

If you insist on finding a distinction between "processing" and "editing", I think it might come down to this: "Editing" seems to me to suggest deliberately modifying an image in some way (whether to recreate an accurate representation, set a particular mood, or even to distort); while "Processing" includes all of "editing" as well as doing the minimum necessary to get from the camera's sensor to a print.

Thus, if I shoot a photo in RAW format, then run it through a RAW converter using all defaults to create a TIFF file, and then send that TIFF to my printer with no further adjustments, then I might be able to claim that I have "processed" the image without "editing" it. But that is somewhat of a stretch.

I tend to agree with both of you--semantics can get you in trouble when you come down to the fine line, but....I really do think of editing as that process I go through at the front end of the processing process.  IOW---I 'edit' my shots by choosing what will stay, what will go, rate them, delete some, etc.  However, the meaning of edit is actually more as you describe---i.e. Webster says 3. to prepare for presentation by cutting, dubbing, etc. and 4. to make change in (a computer file).

So--my much more narrow idea of editing is basically wrong LOL--but it gives a 'name' to what I do first I guess.

I think the 3 phrases cited are all basically the same thing--as you both have pretty well stated.

Diane,

You have added an important point, helping to muddy the waters further.

I was thinking of one image at a time in my post, but I agree with you that selecting which ones to work on is an act of editing. Hmmm. I gues it could also be considered analysis.

You may find that this process is more accurately labelled by the term 'triage'.

I would tend to differentiate the three terms:

Processing is the steps that need to be performed to make the image displayable according to a well defined and FIXED set of tasks (though the parameters governing the tasks may change) - i.e it is about a process.

Editing is a stage beyond processing in that it is a VARIABLE set of tasks required to come up with a final image, where the operator decides which tasks and paramters to deploy in order to reach a final image. i.e. there is no fixed process.

Analysis is evaluating the input data with or without processing/ editing in order to present summarised information according to certain criteria.

Thanks for the early replies and i feel people are really fast here, like their cameras at 5fps(Five replies! So fast! Good!)

But not still clear here

Say i do a task of taking some image as INPUT and increase brightness of each pixel say by five counts and the OUTPUT of this task is  an image. So in this act both the input and output is image. and I think we can fairly call this as Image Process ( or image edit to some extent if i am right !)

Now say i do another task, some image as input and calculate the average brightness of the image and here the out put is just a numerical value( say for clarity avg brightness is 178). In this act the INPUT is image and OUTPUT is non image (a numerical value) .

Should the second act is image analysis or is it image process ? any thoughts

Thanks to all

If all you're doing is calculations and measurements with a numeric final output as opposed to an image, that would be analysis. If you're output is an image, calling it processing or editing would be acceptable, there is no rigidly defined distinction between the two. "Processing" is more often used when the steps are mostly automated, and "editing" is used to describe the process of choosing which images to work with and which to discard as well what happens to an image file between opening and saving, but in most cases, if you open an image file, do stuff to it, and save it, you could call what you did "processing" or "editing" with equal validity.
