This is a known issue, but a rather obscure one for some reason. I just faced it when trying to add my second paper using the Custom>Fine Art>Pearl (more ink) preset. I already have calibration and a profile using this preset for Hahnemuhle Pearl paper and wanted to add another pearl paper for Crane Silver Rag. After struggling for quite a while on my own, I finally called HP tech support.
After about half an hour of describing my situation, being put on hold while the tech asked a question, then back on hold again, I was told I needed to speak with someone on the color team (vs. the Mac team). After 20 more minutes on hold, they finally decided to call me back. When the color specialist called back and I described my problem, he said that he hadn't heard of any issues adding a new custom paper with a custom preset. He tried it on his PC (side note: he said that they had only 2, yes 2 macs in the whole department and they were both busy) and could not create a new custom paper with pearl as the paper type. I was then put on hold for another 25 minutes while he tried to figure it out with their printer and PC.
While I was on hold, I had plenty of time to kill, so I reread this document and found my answer:
https://h41186.www4.hp.com/hpp/Data/working...?pageseq=260246Lurking on page 25 was my answer: YOU CAN"T DO IT! HP says that you can only have one custom paper type for each preset calibrated at a time. You can create an infinite number of paper names and ICC profiles, but can only have one calibration for each paper type of custom paper. I can have 100 different custom glossy photo paper names, each with calibration, unique paper name and ICC profile, but only one pearl type paper period.
The bottom line is that until this is fixed, as per HP's document, you have to recalibrate everytime you change pearl or other custom preset paper types. The database that the Printer Utility uses as a starting point for calibration and profiling, which the document describes as the most critical part of the new paper process, is not updated when you add new presets. The new paper type preset appears in the paper list under custom and on the control panel of the printer, but not in the drop down list of paper presets you choose when defining a new paper name.
Let's hope that this is addressed in the mythical firmware upgrade that is coming, because it is wasteful of paper and ink and time, and just a silly inconsistency in the software. Ironically, I had to explain what I had read to the second level tech person, who was not even aware of the issue. We both discussed that it would be fixable if you could find where the information was stored on the server, but it does not appear to be user addressable.
Does everyone else already know about this, or do most people not have more than one pearl or other custom paper choice that they work with?
