case for Canon G7/G9
« on: September 22, 2007, 09:24:45 pm »

Anyone find the perfect case for the Canon G7/G9 yet? I tried the canon semi hard leather case, and was a bit dissapointed, well made, but I'm looking for something very simple, like a slip case to protect from scratches, no extra pouches and pockets. Something like the old rollei 35 soft zippered case would be perfect. The challenge is finding somethig that works with the camera strap.

Yeah, the Canon leather case is a joke -- it's about 5 times bigger than necessary.

I have checked every small leather or fabric case in every store in three cities. OK, so I live in the boonies in NC, but I still tried a lot of cases. No luck so far. I did ditch the camera strap for one of the neoprene wrist straps from Op/Tech, and I generally carry the camera in a tiny waist pack, rather than over a shoulder.

I've not found a perfect solution but I picked up 2: Lowepro Apex 30 pouches.

http://lowepro.com/Products/Camera_Pouches...Apex_30_AW.aspx

Left one in tact when I need maximum versatility and with the other:

- removed the AW cover
- removed the internal divider
- snipped the strap anchor points
- removed the velcro slip lock fastening

As I said it's not perfect but I'm left with ok protection and a very light weight simple case.  The modifications are easy and don't leave the case looking tatty.

The Lowepro D-Pods 30 fits my G9 like a glove. It's stretchy. Interior dimensions are 2.75" by 1.5" by 5".

I like the shoulder strap on the G9, the camera hangs well under your arm for walking around and having the camera ready to shoot in a moment, so was looking for a case that works with the strap. Maybe the Canon case will have to do.

Why bother?  It will only add bulk and slow you up.  The product cycle for these cameras is now too short to worry about a few marks or scratches; the G10 will be out in a year or 18 months, and so on.  I had a Fuji F10 I kept in my pocket along with car keys and change.  It looked a little battered but it worked perfectly throughout its natural lifespan (and still does, even though no longer used much).

Agree... I never use the case when I'm shooting or carrying the camera when I think I might be shooting. It slides right into my pocket. The case is for when the camera is in my luggage or in my backpack along with other gear, including stuff that might damage the camera (e.g., pocket knife).

I found this one on an ebay site after looking for a slip-type case for two days. It is virtually identicle to the one Canon uses for the ELPH. A guy in the UK sells it for about $18, delivered. It takes around 8 days to arrive. He answers all emails promptly It can be viewed at:

[a href=\"http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=120166966657&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=002]http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...:MEWN:IT&ih=002[/url]

It is leather, with "CANON" embossed on the front flap. The G9 fits into it as if it was made for it.  It's a very nice addition. You probably can't use the neck strap that came with the camera (I don't like it, anyway. It's cheap looking). I bought a generic wrist strap (like the Elph uses) at my local camera store for $5. If you need a neck strap, the case comes with a shoulder strap you could use.

Now, if Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 would only offer a RAW converter plug-in for the G9. The new 4.2 upgrade, download may work. We'll see.
