Yellowstone advice for Tetons/Yellowstone trip
« on: September 10, 2007, 09:12:29 pm »

I'm going to be going on a trip to the Tetons and Yellowstone from Sept 22 to Oct 8.

I plan on spending one night in yellowstone to start the trip before proceeding to the Tetons. I'm also going to spend 4 days in yellowstone at the end of the trip.
I've got a pretty good idea where i want to go in the tetons this time around and am familiar with the ideal lighting times there at the various locations.

However, i'd appreciate some advice for yellowstone. I'm spending my first night at yellowstone Lake and thought that i would go to Artist point for sunrise. I'd appreciate some advice on where to do sunset as well.  I've got around 5 days in yellowstone this time around, I decided to stay in different locations,.  In the past i found that bcoz of the size of the park, it was hard to get around to ideal lighting locations staying at either Gardiner or West Yellowstone on 2 or 3 day trips.

On the way back i've got 3 nights in Mammoth and 1 night at the Snow lodge/cabins by old faithful. I'd appreciate some advice on sunset and sunrise lcoations near by, as well as best bets for wildlife -- particularly bears or moose.

I'm currently in the process of posting my Tetons photos on my pbase gallery you can see them at the following address:

I believe Artist Point, and the road up to it, are closed until some time next year. The road and the observation deck are being rebuilt. I'd certainly check at the hotel to confirm this, but I believe I'm correct.

Thanks for letting me know.  Someone else also mentioned that Artist point was closed, but he wasn't sure of the reason.  That is really disapointing as Artist point is one of the spots i was really looking forward to - i ended up booking accomodations at yellowstone lake, bcoz it was the closest location to the canyon that is going to be open when i am there.

I was in Yellowstone for 12 days in August and yes, Artist Point is closed, but the platforms over the Lower Falls and Upper Falls aren't closed.

The lower falls platform is right at the lip of the lower falls, so the views are looking straight down at the waterfall, or looking east. Sometimes, if the light is right, you'll get a rainbow right in front of you. Nice, but nothing near as spectacular as the view from Artist's Point. Same goes for the upper falls platform - it's right at the lip of the falls. Both platforms are reached from the north rim of the canyon. While the platforms are nice, if time is limited, I would try Inspiration Point on the north rim of the canyon. Not as nice as the view from Artist's Point, but still pretty spectacular. You might also try the Uncle Tom's Cabin trail from the south canyon road (I believe the road will be open up to this point). Uncle Tom's Cabin trail is really a staircase that extends down into the canyon and gives pretty spectacular views of the lower falls. Basically the trail takes you about half way down into the canyon, about 200 to 300 yards east of the lower falls, so you end up staring right at the lower falls from about it's midpoint. If you're scared of heights, it's not recommended. Also, the climb back up is pretty hard.

I appreciate your advice.  Is the view from Inspiration point one that could be a good sunrise or sunset possibliity?

Inspiration point is basically on the opposite side of the canyon from Artist's Point (a bit closer to the lower falls than Artist's Point, but not by much). So your shots of the falls are looking west, which would be best in the morning. Better yet would be an overcast, to cut down on the deep shadows and soften the light a little.

Have fun. I go to Yellowstone every year at least once (usually in the spring), and like you, I'm disappointed that Artist's Point is going to be closed. But it really was getting run down, so I think in the long run it's a good thing.

Just checked your shots on your website... really nice. I'm impressed. there's a drama and intensity in them ...and nice reflections.  ( referenced back to another of my postings.)

I haven't been to that area  for almost 30 years and was thinking of heading out there this fall. Thanks for the reminder.

Actually I'll be in yellowstone next week,  One location that is really lovely in the evening is the pelican creek and fishing bridge areas looking out towards the lake.  If you have great light and calm water these locations can be magical. Eleanor

I spent 10 days there, be sure to go into the ranger station, any of them and ask the best places to see.  I recommend Grand Prismatic, the boardwalk around Old Faithful, ask where the Harlequin Ducks are, hike out to the marmot fields at Indian Pond, checkout Mammoth Hot Springs the upper loop is spectacular and if you get up really early or stay out really late Lamar Valley has Wolves.
The road from Mammoth over to Fishing Bridge, Tower Falls, you'll probably see a bear or two.  There is so much to see and do.
We were lucky a really good friend of ours is a Master Volunteer Ranger as well as a retired professional photographer so we had the ultimate tour.
Have fun there is a ton of things to see and photograph
Also a cool little town on the North end Gardiner MT, if you go up toward the working Gold Mine there's a pond with a shack that is great for photography.

if you are going to do grand prismatic, you need to cross the street at the parking lot, find the trail that goes up the hill,, that will give you the view of the entire spring, other wise, walking around the boradwalk will not give you the full view,

I had a pretty good trip to Tetons and Yellowstone - despite the worst weather i've seen after 4 straight years of going to the tetons.  I only ended up spending 1 1/2 days at yellowstone and as it was raining or snowing for most of the time, i mainly just shot wildlife.  my time in Yellowstone once again ended up being spoilt by bad weather.  I had planned to stop by for 4 days on my way back from the tetons but the south entrance was closed due to snow and since i needed to return back to the office early, i decided to forego my plans for yellowstone once again.

Here is a shot from the tetons.

I've finally started processing my files and will be posting them on my pbase gallery, you can see what i have processed at the following address:
http://www.pbase.com/kssphotography/tetons_fall_2007

the yellowstone shots are in the Wildlife galleries.
