Canon 40D - Raw Converter Vendors
« on: September 04, 2007, 07:35:55 pm »

I just got a Canon EOS 40D DSLR camera.  I normally shoot strictly in camera Raw, but because Photoshop CS3/Lightroom V1.1 don't support the 40D yet, I am looking for a temporary alternate vendor who will soon support this camera.  Unfortunately, the Canon DPP software is worthless for any kind of reasonable workflow.

Thank you

Bibble Labs has just added 40D support to the latest test version (v4.9.8e) of Bibble Pro & Bibble Lite. In addition to the standalone program, Bibble Pro provides a plugin for Photoshop CS2 & CS3 which allows it to integrate pretty much like Adobe Camera Raw.

Jack,

Thanks for responding so quickly with a "now" solution for a Raw Converter for the Canon EOS 40D.

Do you know if this is the product that Michael Reichmann was referring to in his "September 3, 2007 - Canon 40D Hands-On Report"?

If I install the Bibble Labs Pro plugin for Photoshop CS3 as a Camera Raw Converter, will I be able to toggle within Photoshop CS3 as to whether I want the Bibble Labs converter or Adobe Camera Raw converter to be used until I toggle back?  Can I remove the Bibble Labs Pro plugin at any time, if I no longer need it?

Thanks for your assistance.

Regards,
Gary

Hi, Gary -

No problem - I, too, am on the lookout for updates that work with the 40D!

I don't know if this is the product Michael referred to - I imagine that all the vendors are busy updating their products.

As of CS2, I didn't know of an easy way to switch between ACR & Bibble within Photoshop - I think CS3 has a preference setting to force it to use ACR, but I haven't tried it. When I have both installed, I open from Bridge or IMatch to ACR if I want to use ACR & directly to Photoshop CS3 (which then opens the Bibble plugin) if I want to use Bibble. You can remove the Bibble plugin completely by deleting it from the plugin folder.

While I rather like Bibble and used to use it exclusively, after the release of ACR 4.1 I switched to it. I got my 40D Friday, so over the weekend I had no choice but to use DPP - and I have to say that I think it's coming out ahead of Bibble in the few comparisons I've made this evening (using the same raw files with each). (I use IMatch to manage my photos, and it works pretty well with DPP so it doesn't impact my workflow much. However, I'm a hobbyist photographer with pretty low workflow requirements.) I'm looking forward to a version of ACR that works with the 40D so I can compare it with DPP.

Regards,

Jack

I doubt he was talking about Bibble -- I bet he was talking about a new ACR or LR.

Silky Pix also has a beta that will read 40D files. I've never tried it but I've heard good things.

With in a few months RD will support the 40D. I am hoping they will add the G9 camera to.
