Canon 580EX flash on Contax 645/P30
« on: September 04, 2007, 10:27:43 am »

Hi all,

I have been a Canon user for some time, and recently decided to move to MF. I purchased a Contax 645 and P30+ (got my loaner P30 unit) and was wondering if I could definitely use my 580EX directly on the hot shoe of the Contax without harming any piece of equipment (especially the digital back).

I have trawled through the net only to find a few sentences pertaining to my question. Alot of people say it's fine and that there will be no damage done to any piece of equipment.

Has anyone done this, or knows for sure if it's safe/recommended?

I just tried the flash on the Contax (just ETTL mode) with no back attached, and it fired perfectly.

I'm happy to purchase the TLA360, but if it's totally fine to use my 580EX then I absolutelty will....it's nice not only to save a little money here and there, but also to be able to use something that is readily available:).

Thanks in advance for your help.

The only flash that's dangerous to use would be the older ones with the huge trigger voltages. The canon one should be fine.
