Z3100 Driver Update Insanity (Mac)

This is driving me nuts. I love my Z3100 24" printer, but it keeps telling me that my driver needs updating. The driver version has been 5.0.2. A new driver (5.0.2b), indeed, has been out for some time. I have downloaded the appropriate files from HP's site, unpacked the .dmg file and installed the files. The splash screen on the installer says that I'm updating the driver to the "b" version. Yet, when I check to see what driver has been installed after the process has been run, it still says 5.0.2! Then, the dumb software keeps telling me that I need to update the driver! I've been using the May 14th version of the HP Designjet Installer. I just don't know what to do. This happens whether I get the driver through the Printer Utility (which never successfully installs it - I have to do it manually), or when I get the files directly from HP's Web site. Thanks in advance. BTW, I am very computer literate. I've had macs since 1986 and never encountered this kind of problem.

I thought 5.0.4 was the latest. My mistake, the firmware rev was 5.0.4 , the driver shows 5.0.2. I looked in the executables, and no version number is listed, but the date is March 29th. They could have written an error into the version checking strings , and or the history cache is not being pointed in the right direction.
I have seen problems all too often when installing multiple HP printer drivers on Macs where the utility changes pointers in any which way. It's probably one or the other.

Thanks, Neil. It's good to hear that your driver is 5.0.2., too! Does your system tell you that the driver needs updating, too? Is there a way of cleaning  out the cache? I wonder if other folks are experiencing this.

I wrote to HP about this, and haven't heard anything back yet..

Mine doesn't. I am having problems with redrawing the printers list, but I think that is a bug introduced with EFI. I've got way too many drivers and RIPs on the same machine, many being beta.

I am using the latest mac version too on a Z3100 44" and have only small problems .

also with me the driver version ( as systempreferences/printing) tells me is 5.02- without the b

maybe it is an idea to do the "Driver — Full, automatic installation"  available at

I am getting the same message, but am just ignoring it with no serious problems. I did download and reinstall the driver, but didn't think about uninstalling the old one first. Perhaps that is the problem.

Well, I deinstalled everything and started over again. I reinstalled the original driver from the CD and then updated it to 5.0.2b. Everything went well, but it still shows that the driver is 5.0.2. I haven't gotten any messages since then, but if I do, I'm just going to ignore it, like you, and see what happens.

On my Mac Pro I've been able to do the new driver thing easily - I downloaded the "Driver — Full, automatic installation" to my desktop first, then I used the install disk to do an uninstall of the previous driver.  Once that was cleaned out, I installed the new downloaded version.  Worked great - no problems.

Better than the Firmware update which, although sketchy at the point of "restart" did work fine.

I think uninstalling using the original disk is the way to go.
