I have a call into Mamiya and should be talking to them Thursday. I'll ask if this is true.

Hi
The battery for the ZD camera is BA 701. From my web search it is the same as, JVC VH-BPL13A, Energizer ER C601, Hitachi VMBP13A. Hope this helps as they are about $20-$35.00. This is a battery used in a Cam Recorder.

I've been shooting with non-mamiya batteries since I bought the camera, no problems at all, is just depending on the brands you have to put a piece of sticky tape on the rear side of the battery for them not to get stuck with the white plastic pin on the camera.

No, because I just bought 3 of the same brand (DTI Electronics), I wouldn't get worried so much about it, go in a store where they sell videocameras and they will have several brands for sure (Panasonics are common) just check the voltage befor you buy (7.2V/1800mAh).

I picked up 2 of the Minolta/ Konica batteries for the 7D and I can say without a doubt that they are the exact same batteries as the $160 Mamiya units. Same specs, color, caps, etc. I charged one last night and popped it into my ZD back and it fired right up.

Best part is that you can buy them from B+H for $10! The counter guy at B+H said they have something like 500 of the Minolta branded battery in stock. The only caveat is these batteries have been sitting for awhile so some might not last as long as the newer knock-offs.

I'm honestly a little p.o.'d at Mamiya for pricing the ZD batteries so ridiculously high.
