Paper suppliers in Canada
« on: August 27, 2007, 09:12:11 pm »

Hi,

Just wondering where Canadian photographers are buying their art papers, or if there are any US suppliers that are able to deliver good service to Canada.

I ordered some samples from Inkjetart, seems to be taking forever, and shipping isn't so cheap.

thank you,

Paul

Laziness and sloth lead me to buy paper from Henrys and Vistek.  I'm in Ottawa, so I just wander into the stores.  If there's a paper they don't carry in store (from a manufacturer that they do carry) they're usually quite good at sourcing it for me.

RedRiver has a good variety of papers, and they also have a "non-resident importer" permit from Canada so there's no brokerage fees on shipping.  I have a lot of stuff printed on their UltraPro Satin 2.0

I've used Vistek in Toronto on many occasions and highly recommend them. They're very prompt with shipping (1-2 days) and very competitive on price, plus they carry a wider range of brand name papers than any of the other outlets.

Another option is a division of Henry's called Headshots. If you live close to a Henry's, Headshots can ship your purchase to them and you can pick up and save yourself the shipping charges.

I have ordered paper from Mostly Digital in London. They ship almost immediately and I found prices on some sizes of some papers (like Epson Velvet) to be almost half the price of Henry's.

I have found a supplier in Laval, QC, near Montreal,  that has about 100 + kinds of paper for large format printing. Everything is house brand, but I found their satin Instant Dry to be slightly superior to HP in terms of the look of the finish, about the same in terms of gamut etc. Their web site is more developed on the French side, if you can manage la langue de Moliere. The staff is bilingual, however, if you give them a call.

These guys get all my ink and paper business....

The only "downside" is they print the running total of how much you've spent,  makes me a bit queasy every time I look at that number.
