Essay Printing with Colour Images
« on: August 27, 2007, 10:13:14 am »

I am about to submit my final essay for a college course I am doing in Renaissance art - the essay will have 6-10 images that I have scanned in from books or got slides of from the relevant gallery in amongst 20 pages of text. I need to print out 3 copies of the essay for marking and would like to make sure that the presentation is good.

I have an Epson 2100 printer at home so could use that but would like advice on what paper to use - I would like to use the same paper for all of the work (whether the page has an image or not) for consistency but don't have much experience with "normal" papers and this printer. I have tried ordinary laser printer paper with poor results, naturally the images look good on premium lustre or similar but 60 pages of that is going to cost and would be hard for the person marking to work with.

Any ideas?

Thanks

The Epson 2100 works best with matte rather than glossy papers. Epson's Enhanced matte (previously called archival matte, now pompously titled "ultrapremium presentation matte") is probably your best bet. It's relatively cheap, It produces high print quality, and is reasonably light in weight if you're stacking pages.

Does this have the Epson logo on the back? I would ideally like the paper to look just like "normal paper" rather than something a bit unusual

Thanks

There is no logo on the back but it is only for single sided printing.  The front or print side is coated and a brighter white than the back which looks more like a common bond paper for ink jet or laser printing.  There are several dual sided matte papers as well from various suppliers if you want to print on both sides.  Epson also has a dual sided matte paper but it is not as thick and I prefer images that are printed on the Enhanced (Ultra Premium Presentation) Matte

Enhanced Matte does not have a logo on the back. It is single-sided, so you can only print well on the "front". The matte surface makes it easy to write on.

For your project, I would be tempted to use the Enhanced Matte for pages that have images on them, and plain paper for pages that have only text. The downside is that the photo pages will be thicker and stiffer than the text-only pages, but that often happens in books, too. The whole essay will be a bit more manageable in overall thickness with different paper (and cheaper to print, too). But I'm sure either way will be acceptable to your readers.

Thanks, I was hoping to use a single paper throughout but as you suggest a better compromise is likely to be a mix of reasonable quality plain paper plus the images on a matte paper.
