IPF6100 vs Z3100
« on: August 21, 2007, 12:12:01 am »

Greetings everyone.. first I would like to say this forum has been an invaluable resource for me in the past couple weeks and has been greatly appreciated! Hoping I will be able to provide my own personal insights particularly in the printing forum as I gain more experience.

My personal interest lies in printing, and I've been researching large format printers for about a month now. I've been able to narrow my selections to the HP z3100 and the Canon IPF6100 but before I committed to purchasing I'm really anxious to read some 'hands on' detailed reports on the Canon.

The only problem is I can't seem to find any thorough reviews of the IPF6100. I'm under the impression that it was released in July, and I'm surprised that no one has posted their personal opinions. Even though it was released a few months ago is it now just reaching the market?

These two printers both sound like excellent options. I probably can't go wrong with either of them but I'm hoping someone might be able to shed some light on the current status of the IPF6100.

By the way... I purchased and downloaded "From Camera to Print" and it was a very interesting and informative series.. well worth the money. Big thanks to Michael and Jeff.

Michael stated in another thread that he will be getting an iPF6100 and posting his review/comparison with other 24 inch printers some time in September.  You are right, there aren't any real reviews of the iPF6100 yet.  I think it was released in the U.S. a few weeks before it was released in Europe, which could contribute to the delay in reviews appearing.

I'm working on a review of the 6100 as well, and will compare to the Z3100 I also have. I should be done in about a week.

Jon.. I'm not pestering you I promise.    I'm so excited to get real world accounts on the 6100. I have to ask... so you already have one, and you're just detailing your experience?

Jess -

I'm just wrapping up the review now, it'll be ready to post over the weekend. I do have the 6100 sitting alongside my Z3100. I'm reviewing it for Shutterbug and for Digital Journalist, but it's getting regular use as well.

I'll be real interested to hear if they are still restricting the paper types that can be feed through the roll holder.  That's been my main complaint with the ipf5000.  Some better documentation would be appreciated also.  Hopefully these topics will get mentioned.

I’m also quite interested in your findings.
But, maybe for some different reasons; I’ve been waiting for HP to announce a 17” or sheet fed version.
I’m predominantly a Fine Art photographer who’s photos will be protected by glass, but I’m going to be sharing the printer with a Portrait photographer that is interested in making “wallet size” and other photos that may be handled a lot.  We thought that the Gloss enhancer might offer a little extra protection to the print surface.

But if the reformulation of inks on the ipf6100 ( and 5100 ) show a fairly durable print surface, we may just go ahead with a ipf5100.

So, looking forward to your review Jon.

Are any of the reviews out yet on the 6100 or 5100? I've been looking but not finding any.

I find it curious if not disconcerting, that there are no reviews of the 6100. Indeed, no comments, let alone reviews. Conspicuous by the absence of such comments. Is the printer really shipping? Does anyone REALLY have one?

Printer has been available for purchase in the U.S. for over 2 months.  I haven't seen a single comment about it either.  Very strange.

I checked on Friday, the IPF6100 is in stock and available in Canada for about $3800, less than the price of a Z3100 24" without the APS.

I don't like that all these 24" printers come with a "starter" set of ink. So you really don't want to buy a printer without a spare set of standard ink cartridges, upping the initial cost by nearly a thousand dollars.

Where have you found its availability in Canada? I am in Toronto and have yet to find anyone that even knows anything about the 6100 other than it exists.

For those watching this thread, I’m most interested in the inkset changes – from the 5000 too the 6100 and how this now compares to the Z3100.
I’m ultimately looking at the IPF5100.
As an aside, I called two Canon printer dealers ( in the US ) about the 5100 availability ( they have the 6100's ).  They said it was their “opinion” that the 5100’s are ready and stacking up, but Canon won’t release them until the dealers have been able to unload more of the leftover 5000’s.

Hi Jon,

Any progress to report? The 5100 goes on sale here in Oz in two weeks and it would be REALLY nice to have some ideas of what to expect.

Some of you may already know this. It's news to me.

Graph expo 2007 news. Seems like the new IPF6100 is getting some kind Mistubishi software bundle. The article says it comes standard. Is this new for the IPF6100 and IPF5100?
