ZD-Back: Strang observation
« on: August 19, 2007, 04:00:14 am »

Good Morning Everbody!
For this weekend i got an ZD-Back for testing on my 645 AFD IID and the RZ IID

In some situations i found a strange thin line in the middel of the frame...looks like the picture is diveded into two parts....

i was curious to look if something is visible on the sensor..and YES it looks like the sensor consists of 6 parts.. i tried to scan it and need to apply a harsh curve to make it visible :-)

here is a smal picture where you can see the line

this image was taken with th RZ in Portrait orientation
exif File: MMFC8305.jpg
Camera Model: MAMIYA ZD
Firmware:           Ver  0
Date/Time: 2007:08:18 16:58:30
Shutter speed: 1/125 sec
Aperture: 4
Exposure mode: Manual
Flash: Off
Metering mode: Average
ISO: 200

anyone with the same problem?
it seems to occur on the RZ and i found this also on the AFDII at ISO 100 on a uniform background...

kind regards Janosch

Hi,
Check your flashes, I know it sounds strange.

I found on 4 of my shots a similair problem HOWEVER this was MUCH MUCH smaller, maybe in total a line covering 5-10% of the frame running down in portrait setting.
It appears on the shots I used a cheap chinese fill in kicker in the studio.
When I shoot with only the Elinchroms I did not find the line anywere.

Tried it again a week later and it was gone completely even with the cheap flash in the setup.
Don't know if it had anything to do with it but it struck me as odd that in that session all shots with the kicker had the line.
But again that line was MUCH MUCH smaller than this.

Do you have the same line in the mamiya software ?

Yes the sensor is made of several parts, like other Dalsa sensors on leaf backs...search on this forum for "centerfold issue" and you will see several posts. In my zd (camera) I cannot see these lines never except when I'm cleaning the sensor and shooting f22 over white and then applying an ultra strong curve to see the dust. I think it can be either a) manufacture problem  the way the light hits the sensor is not usual (ex. view camera movements). If it happened to you only once I would not worry about it.

Any relevance to the  fact that the centerfold problem sample image shows its horizontal line where there are no chip boundaries?  (the only centered line in the sensor is a vertical one)

The sample image shows an issue that is related to the use of multiple readouts and is common to almost all current MF sensors that utilise this technology (except for the 16MP and 22MP Kodaks that only use one output).

This is totally different to the one called "centrefold" although I understand how these two can be easily confused and how some are eager to jump in and point fingers at the Aptus backs.

The same issue was previously discussed here: P files with LR problem

At any rate, this should be dealt with by the back's chipset & firmware.

i have had similar problems with my P30 back when high asa files (400, 800)  are processed in LR or CR.....since it does not show up in C1, the issue is a software issue, meaning that the original software corrects for the hardware issue....try and process in different software and see if the problem is still there...good luck
