P45+ Sharper than P30+ ?
« on: August 14, 2007, 07:26:37 pm »

Is the P45/+ sharper than the P30+ due to the absence of microlenses ? Does it need less sharpening in post ?Are there fewer focus issues with the P45 ?

Edmund,

IMO I think the P45+ is a bit sharper than the P30+.  Here are two links to downloads that will show you some tests shots of both.

Don't forget that both the P45+ and the P30+ have pixels that are 6.8 x 6.8 microns.

Anyone here with an opinion on sharpness and focus issues ? I have a feeling the microlenses might also affect focus tolerances

Chris,

Thank you for posting those Raw files which appear to be imaged in quick succession, and from the same location and with the same lens.

I converted in C1, and the P45 shows not only better sharpness, but better sharpness everywhere - it looks like the depth of field is greater. The P30+ is much smoother.

It looks like microlenses do have a strong effect on sharpness and DOF -increased capture area translates not only into better sensitivity but also greater blur. No free lunch.

I have tried two P30+ and the sharpness was way different.
On of them was so sharp i had to turn of all sharpness when shooting people.
So I am not sure it is a P45/P30 issue when it comes to sharpness.

And about P30 having a shallower depth than P45 ( if I understood you right),
that is very strange. The chip size should result it be the other way around.

Re. different sharpness in your samples, maybe it was the camera-back distance adjustment that differed ?

Re. P45 vs P30, no I am talking about the fact that the microlenses take up more area, therefore "catching" more photons but also blurring their action as spatial samplers.

In the images posted by Chris, I hav ethe impression that the P45 image eeds no capture sharpening. Some Aptus 22 images sent me by James Russell were the same.

I still think it is difference between individual back that is the reason for this.
The difference between my two backs are aprox the same as the
difference between this P30 and P45-

And if you thought the Aptus 22 files where as sharp as the P45.
I am even more sure. When I tested an Aptus 22 a year ago, I rejected
it because I thought it was not sharp enough.

It could be minute differences in focusing accuracy between the exposures. I'm constantly astonished at the sensitivity of focusing now that we routinely scrutinise shots at 100% enlargement on our monitors instead of glancing through a x4 loupe on a lightbox.

I've found that a noticeable difference in sharpness occurs with an adjustment of the focusing helical that is so slight it is at the very extreme limits of my tactile abilities, and more importantly is beyond the practical limits delivered by virtually all focusing screens when viewed at normal magnification (ie any magnification that allows you to see the entire screen for compositional purposes).

After carefully squaring up several test shots, and then minutely adjusting the focusing helical in a "focus bracketing" exercise, I no longer trust individual exposures to tell me anything meaningful about sharpness because of the focusing varaibility that will always be present unless a high power loupe is applied directly to a checked and calibrated focusing screen.

Look at the raw samples posted by Chris Lawery - they are at F11 so it is not focus that is at issue here.
