Canon 400 DO Quick Test Results
« on: August 09, 2007, 07:17:02 pm »

Well as I posted earlier I just received my Canon 400 DO lens.  I picked this lens to go along with my 300 2.8 for an upcoming trip my wife and I are making next year to Alaska.  By obtaining this lens I figure that the 300 will go on the 5D and the DO on the 1Ds II.  I’ll be shooting landscape with my medium format and need this for nature/wildlife, especially bears and eagles.  The following is my excuse of a test of the 400 just to see what it can do, like kicking the tires.  This is unscientific in the extreme so take the results with a grain of salt.  This test was for me but I felt like sharing.

Camera:  Canon 1Ds II which is about 2 years old.  I shot all the images auto exposure, aperture priority, 50 ISO, at f/8.  Being lazy and not having too much time I shot everything from my backyard here in Tucson.  I wanted to pick distances that we might encounter as well as to the extreme.  All images were shot RAW then opened in CS3.  I allowed CS3 to pick the best solution for each image (I normally like to work each manually but wanted to attempt to render each as close to one another as possible.) So here goes:

Almost forgot – all these were shot off tripod with IS on.

Here’s a pot that could be the size of a young bear are 98 yards:

Order of images: 1st Prime 2nd 1.4 3rd 2.0 extender

This is way harder than what it looks just posting this.  I had written this in MS Word and inserted the images thinking I could just do a cut and past - no such luck!

Okay these three images are of a house vent that sits 68 yards away.  The order of images are 1st Prime, 2nd 1.4 and 3rd 2.0 extender....

This is the last test images.  I wanted to go to the extreme so I went out to 566 yards.

Same order of images as before.

I see that a lot of people are opening this thread so I thought I'd share the following images from this morning.

I found that I got better images by changing the ISO from 50 to 100

Aperture Priority f/7.1
Handheld
Manual Focus
approx 12 feet distance from subject
focal length 560mm

While it may not be a bear, humming birds can be a bear to capture!

Image order:  1st Uncropped; 2nd Cropped; 3rd Uncropped; 4th Cropped

This will be the last post of samples as I'm very pleased with what I see.  We're heading the Desert Museum next week to take some sample photos of larger animals that have fur.

I hope this post has helped in some way.
