Adapting a Linhof Master Technika for a Digiback
« on: August 09, 2007, 11:40:00 am »

Has anyone adapted or heard of anyone adapting a Linhof Master Technika for a digiback or even a sliding back?

Thanks

I know it can be done, but I'm not sure it'd be the best decision.

I used a Master Technika for years for architectural photography. So when digital came along I wnated to stay with it, but my Linhof dealer advised me to think about the M679 and I was glad I took the advice.

The key thing is that with a tiny 37mm x 49mm sensor you'll need wider lenses which will be a problem with the Master Technika, and even more importantly you'll need much more precision when setting camera movements with a tiny sensor than with great big sheets of forgiving 4x5 film, so "geared everything" should be your watchword.

Actually for the rugged, compact style of the Master Technika I sometimes use a Hasselblad Flexbody with a digital back, because the sensor is smaller than 6x6 film there's a reasonable amount of lens movement possible, and it's certainly easier to carry and faster to operate than the M679cs!

Just my thoughts.

Appreciate the feedback.

The Master Technica is a beautiful camera for what it is and how it can be used.  But I too am not convinced there is a suitable pathway to convert for robust digi use.  Even with a 3rd part graflox back adapterplate you would be forced to compose on a computer or got through the task of removing the back and placing a groundglass focusing screen on - not convenient or practical in most field applications.  I have deduced that a sliding back is not an option as the you know that the graflox mech is fixed in the vert position and built into the camera.  This would only allow a sliding back to be mounted in a verticle sliding position and not the necessary horizontal position- hence not workable.

The ebay auction (thanks for the link) which is a 6x9 conversion plate (will not fit a 4x5 Master Technica) looks like a v mount and theoretically would, but would not eliminate critical focus issues and may present issue w/wide angle lens shooting.
