Hp Z3100 Starwheel marks, Fix?
« on: August 03, 2007, 11:54:35 am »

I have problems with starwheel marks in my prits using gloss and satin paper. I reported this issue ti HP support and hey came and changed the starwheel assambly twice. with no improvment. as i did not give upp and wanted/want to return the printer. HP alerted the "facotory and design team for this printer. Today HP contacted me and informed that they have a solution "they think" abd want to test it on my printer. Iasked them if they are again going to change the starwheel asmbly and they answerd -it's a nother part that they have redesigned. HP will install it by the end of next week. I will then repport about the outcome

Alex-
I'm curious about the outcome of your experience, as I'm fighting the same battle right now (http://luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=19564&hl=).  The title of my post is now a tad ironic, since it turned out to only be a temporary fix.

I'm seeing starwheel marks in a print I ran at 1200 DPI, but I don't see them in the 600 DPI prints.  Perhaps it is an issue of the ink being /too dry/ on this surface (red river ultrapro satin) at the slower print speed -- 1200dpi takes forever.  if the ink is still somewhat liquid at 600dpi, then the starwheel marks will level out when the paper passes underneath.

A curious thought.  Not sure where to go with it, though.

Hi HP send a tech guy from Barcelona he had a prototype with him that lift the a part of the starwheel assambly. He told me that the starwheel asamble has a fixed part and a part taht is possibe to rise. the prototyp lift the moving part of the assambly. In my case the marks was med by the wheels on the fixed part so the prototype did not work for me. the tech guy informed me that they will do some more tweekning and try other solutions.

I haven't had the starwheel problem yet, but haven't done any prints on glossy yet.

However, it amazes me that HP put starwheels back on a printer!

Back in the late 1990's, we had a DesignJet 2500CP and 3500CP which had a lot of problems with starwheels. HP then finally brought out an upgrade, which mechanically raised the whole (replacement) starwheel assembly, if desired.  To counteract the problems then arising with the paper then not laying flat enough, they shipped a clamp-on roll to hang on the leading end of the paper to drag it down. Of course, you had to hold down the leading edge by hand until enough of the paper had been fed out of the printer to attach the clamp-on. Generally a two person action!

It sounds like HP is trying out the same makeshift solution that barely worked 8 years ago. I would have thought that they had learned from their mistakes.

Yes, a vacuum table is louder, but at least it works!
