What's wrong with this picture
« on: July 19, 2007, 09:36:46 am »

Dear All

Enclosed a picture I took of the Maglev in Shanghai, China. Forget the artistic value of the picture etc, I am concerned about the lights of the train, as they leave a trail. I know that is not the perfect description of the problem, but I do not knwo any better words for it
I did not take the picture though glass / a window.
I am using a Canon 20D with the EFS 17-85mm and took the picture in automatic mode (1/500 and F11 at 55mm) - I also have a filter hama HTMC-HR : UV
I took quite a few pictures at night of other things, but basically never had this problem before

Appreciate any advice that you can give me,

thanks & best regards
York

It looks to me like flare from the train lights reflecting off either your lens or the filter. If you can get to the same place again, I would try it with no filter on the lens and see if that works better. Also be sure the camera lens is clean.

That's my best guess.

Thanks, will try to do so, one thing I remember, it was extremly humid that day and a came out of a cool taxi, then I carefully cleaned the lens, maybe this contributed to the effect,
thanks again Eric,
best regards York

It looks as if the image was taken through a window. Clean up the lens and whatever filter you may be using. It looks like humid haze.
