Lighting 4 Macro w/ Cross-Polarization
« on: June 28, 2007, 01:08:23 pm »

I'm new to this so I'm going to stumble, but I need your thoughts/advice.

I want to take macro shots of minerals and polished agates (brightly colored banded stones) using SoLux lights because of their Color Rendering Index. Also want to use polarizers on the light sources and the lens (Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro). Will have diffsers on the sources too. The Solux MR16 bulbs are 50w each and I'd planned on using 3 of them in articulated lamps for positioning flexability relative to the curved/polished faces of the stones.

The 30D will be on a tripod, but my concern is the amount of light finally reaching the camera. I understand polarizing filters typically have a 30-40% transmission rate??? With 2 filters in line w/each of the 3 sources that's a lot of attenuation.

Will there be enough light left over to take a picture with this set up?

Thank you for your thoughts!
