Interested in landscape composition books
« on: June 23, 2007, 01:54:33 pm »

Hi.

My photography isn't advancing.  Lack of composition and vague design are the culprit.  Can anyone suggest a more visually oriented book with lots of photo critiques about landscape composition?  I've read the theory and found it dull and uninspiring.

Thank-you in advance for any suggestions.

Along those lines, I've learned a lot from Charlie Waite's "The Making of Landscape Photographs" and Freeman Patterson's "Photography and the Art of Seeing".

Charlie springs to my mind too. Joe Cornish is also nice. And there is a lot on the internet.

Thanks, I know his work. He's incredible.  I track down a book by him.

Whoa, before you buy, check your local library.

Tim Fitzharris's latest landscape book (National Audobon Society Guide to Landscape Photography) is very direct with advice; it has beautiful example photos and spells out explicit compositional techniques. Sometimes it comes off a bit too much like a cookbook, but it's an excellent starting point.

David Ward's "Landscape Within: Insights and Inspirations for Photographers" is much more cerebral, with fascinating explorations of the nature of perception and how we translate beauty into print. I found it a wonderful source of new ideas.
