Expected Printhead Life for iPF5000
« on: June 14, 2007, 02:33:05 pm »

Canon has just published a document showing expected printhead life for the iPF5000 printer.  Results are fantastic--14,000 A2 pages at 12.5% coverage per color.  However, while providing some reassurance on the reliability of the printheads, it raises the question of why these heads are warranted for a pathetic 2,200 pages or one year.  If they last 14,000 pages (on average), why not offer a warranty of 7,000 pages?  Unless there is a huge standard deviation, this shouldn't have much affect on their costs.

PDF now available on Wiki front page:  http://canonipf5000.wikispaces.com

Correction: the warranty actually is for 2,200 pages per printhead, which would be 4,400 pages for both printheads compared to 14,000 pages for both printheads in the PDF file mentioned above.  Thus the printheads are covered for just 31% of their life expectancy.  Better, but still pathetic in my opinion.  The warranty would cover just over 3 sets of 130 ml cartridges put through the printer, then you could be on the hook for another $1200.
