Using LR on a Mac with a new HD?
« on: June 12, 2007, 09:42:31 pm »

A little tip that may or may not be of use to people here, but I recently figured out that turning off Spotlight during a large import speeds up the import process by a fairly good amount.  What I was doing was creating a library on a new external HD then importing the pre-existing images from another internal drive using LR's date-based system.  With Spotlight on, the files were taking forever to load in and any click within the program caused a long delay with the spinning beachball.  Hope this helps anyone new to LR facing this sort of issue.

Go to System Preferences>Spotlight and uncheck all the options.  You can also go to the Privacy tab and add the drive your images/library are on.

I'm using Quicksilver in place of Spotlight and it seems to work much better as an indexer/file launcher.

I guess that it depends on the connection mode of your external HD.

Independantly from spotlight, applications like LR and Bridge seem to be very impacted by slow connections (1 GB ethernet for instance) to external HD.

Signing up for LR as a low level DAM sort of means that you need to invest into at least firewire 800 connection, if not eSATA or better yet SCSI Ultra 320.

Bernard
