DNG - Does it really standarize RAW format??
« on: June 10, 2007, 12:33:50 pm »

Hey All!
Till now I was shooting RAW with my faithful 20D and couple a days ago I bought the 400D as backup. Nice. However, I realized that Rawshooter premium 2006 (RIP) was not able to read the new CR2 files.
So, after thinking what to do (except for upgrading for LR - too heavy on my comp), I thought I found a solution: why not convert the CR2 with Adobe DNG and then open them in Rawshooter??   Indeed, I took my 20D RAW's and it worked fine! Hurray!
only to my surprise, upon converting my 400D RAW's, the program didn't recognize either the CR2 file nor the DNG format...  Like, wasn't this the amazing idea of DNG???
Please help - I really like working with the RAWSHOOTER!!

The camera type is still in the file.  If the raw converter wants to kibosh unsupported cameras you're stuck.

Search around on the dpreview forum.  (PC tools likely.)  There is info there on how to change a byte or two in the actual rsp exe (good luck!  make a backup!) so that it will support the 400d.

I think it's our midwestern(Minnesota) Scandihovian way of saying to end or negate something.
Hey, DP. Do you remember Axel?

Perhaps from a bit further south than Scandihovia....

Well, I found the solution and made the change (for EOS400D):
1) convert all files via DNG converter
2) Backup the exec. file (Rawshooter.exe)
3) Open the file in a hex editor
4) Search for the `350D` - there are several of those as Canon likes to have many names to the same product (still can't see the marketing aim behind this...)
5) In my case, my 400D is a Japanease born, thus is called in the RAW exif "EOS Digital Rebel X" - indeed, I found a "EOS Digital Rebel N" and easily I switched the "N" with the "X" and what do you know - it could see both CR2 and DNG (the CR2 are scrambled, but it doen't matter as now we have the DNGs).

Goodluck!

PS - You can also add characters but be sure to substract same amount from other manufactures - i am not sure how it will affect the raw convertion of color etc...
