IP6.1 - OSX - Printer not ready error
« on: June 09, 2007, 11:13:00 am »

Dear all,

I am facing an unsovable issue with IP on my new Mac Pro, and would
really appreciate some help.

I have just switched from a XP workstation to a Mac Pro.

My printer is an Epson 4000, and I have never had any problem
printing to it using IP 6.1 on XP that I have been using in that
context for about 2 years.

However, on the Mac Pro, I keep getting a Printer Not ready (0Xf)
error message. It has not worked a single time.

The environment is the following:

- Mac Pro OS 10.4.9
- Epson 4000 connected to Mac Pro with USB (tried front and read
ports)
- IP6.1 dongle in USB port (tried 2 different rear ports)
- The Epson 4000 is seen by the Epson driver (latest Universal binary
version), and I can print to it using Mac OSX applications calling
this driver. It is therefore not a USB problem.
- Classic has - as far as I know - never been installed on this brand
new Mac Pro.

I have followed the IP setup procedure:

- selected the Epson 4000 from the drop down box,
- selected host mode
- selected USB
- click install -> I get a message that the install was succesful
- the dongle number is correctly displayed, and I am able to set the
printer to enabled after entering the correct encryption code.
- I did re-start the Mac Pro,
- I launch IP, print an image and open the spooler

-> I get the error message mentioned above.

IP is a critical piece of my workflow, and I need to solve this issue
very quickly.

Thank you in advance for your kind help.

Best regards,
Bernard

Hi Bernard

There may be different reasons for this:
- USB-cable too long (maximum 3 m)
- wrong profile for wrong inkset
- "Sheet" not activated in Setup
- what does the printer "say" - is there any message if you send a job?

- are you using 6.1 (1.0.2)?

Markus,

Thanks for the feedback, however:

1. The USB cable is 1m long, and the same I was using before,
2. I have been using on the Mac the same profiles/inkset I was using on XP,
3. ""Sheet" not activated in Setup". Not sure what you mean here, could you please confirm? For what it is worth, I have been printing using roll papers, and have therefore not selected "sheet" in the print options,
4. The printer doesn't react at all when I send a job from IP spooler. The whole thing looks like IP doesn't see the printer at all. On the other hand, the Epson printing utility has no problem at all communicating with the printer using the same USB connection,
5. I have been using the latest 6.0 level advised by colorbyte for OSX, which is 6.0 version 1.3.3.

I could consider upgrading to 7.0 if there were a hope that it would fix the problem, but is there one really...

Regards,
Bernard

Hi Bernard

Ok - sheet is not necessary as you are using roll. Do you see the ColorByte directory in /library/printers (that's where the Epson library is as well)? If not, you may have to reinstall IP after removing the Epson directory from the library just during the installation process.

6.1 is working without problems on IntelMacs. I am not sure about 6.0 however. Maybe you contact me offline at info(at)macz.ch.

Dear all,

After upgrading to IP7.0 I got support from the good folks of Colorbyte on this one.

It took an updated Epson4000 driver to fix the issue. The problem was related to the fact that the Epson 4000 is called PX-6000 in Japan.

It seems that Mac OSX APIs are less flexible that Win XP in terms of printer naming.

Things are now working fine and I am finally able to play my full workflow on my new Mac Pro.

Thanks agai to Daniel at Colorbyte on their efficient support.

Cheers,
Bernard
