P45+
« on: June 08, 2007, 04:52:51 pm »

I got a p45+ for H1/2 (a loaner)  So far very nice..

 I have a question,

how you travel with your digital back ?

my p25 is always attached to my h1.

I have never borrow anything, is my first time. and I don't want to scratch something the is just a loaner, I'm a journalist so i don't care to much if anything of my own  get scratch..

I will be traveling by van( toyota sienna) for 18 days or so.

Thank You

I shot 1ds MKll for a couple years, moved to MF about a month ago, P30/Contax.
I was concerned about location shooting & packing the MF, 90% of what I shoot is lifestyle.
You might call it controlled journalism. I  treat my MF just like my 35mm, even the
same temba camera bag. Back stays on ALL the time unless I need to clean it which is
not that often. I think after a while you will wind up doing the same. It's just another tool.
But a great one!

Keep the back on the camera all the time---less chance for the sensor to get scratched.  Take it off ONLY if it needs cleaning. Eleanor

I have an entire Contax kit with all lenses up to 350 APO.

When you don't have to shoot under pressure the AF is adequate.

The minute that a situation is more than static the AF goes to sh!t.
A lot of searching and a lot of missing. As a result I haven't used it on AF more
than a handfull of times over the last few years.  It is what it is.

I shot with it last week with a loaner P30 doing a studio stock portrait of some
dogs and it was all but impossible to lock focus on an eye or eyes before the dogs
would move a few inches or turn head, etc.

Conversely,I shot the week before with a new H3D-39 and AF was,far and away,
superior to my Contax under similar, but not same, conditions.AF very zippy and accurate.

That said,I only shot AF to test the relative merits of both systems.
I still get a better return when shooting manual focus regardless of the system

Mark

P.S.-Steve,have you gotten any P30 file  feedback, yet, from your stock agency editors?

Believe it or not I shoot 70% of my shots are at 800iso. This is the P30 not
the P30+.

Processing in C1 results are great, however I just changed over to CS3 bridge
workflow: results: (my opinion) C1: great results, colors are not accurate, but
acceptable.  ACR: great results with colors being almost perfect, much better than
C1. C1 did produce less noise. But in ACR I can live with acceptical very small amounts
of noise that only someone with NOTHING else better to do would care about &
have better controls & more accurate colors.

Tips:  process iso800 in C1 Pro with ALL noise setting OFF - then open in PS
& use "Neat Image" noise reducer: amazing results. Try this, it's great!

But....for me ACR works great, I would rather have better colors & controls
in processing than a file that is "funny" on certain colors & a little cleaner.

This is my opinion based on hours shooting different subject/lighting conditions
at iso800. P30

Contax is great, I worked with h1 & 2, Mamiya. I just like the feel of the Contax,
the lenses are scary sharp. I find the autofocus works best at the continuous
setting. He H2 focus was quicker. I love the fact that the Contax has less
electronics. The H1/2 has lots of electronics & the firmware has to match the
"lens" firmware. So much for going on location 2000 miles away & renting
an H2 lens that "may" work with your H2 because it "may" have older or
newer firmware in the lens.

I reckon if you trade the Sienna in on a Bentley it'd get a smoother ride.

Seriously, if you have it in a padded hard case like a Pelican, and just to make sure it doesn't get a scratch keep it inside one of those nice H series leather lens bags there not much more you could do.  For lenses I have used old bicycle tubes cut into short lengths and stretch them over the lens leaving gaps for moving parts and things you want to see as a way of scratch proofing them. I don't think you'd be doing it to a DB though as you have considerations like heat dissipation and an aqward shape to deal with.

My back stays attached to the camera all the time unless I have to clean it. I treat it the same way as all my other stuff – inside a Lightware case. The nice big fancy hard case that came with the back will probably never be used.

I can’t comment too much on the Contax auto focus other than it seems to work - I shoot with the manual focus.

I'd be interested in your conclusions on the P45+, I've got one on order as a trade in for my P25. I wasn't particularly interested in the additional pixels but the additional cost versus the P25+ made it too hard to refuse! Anyhow, I'd welcome your thoughts on the new screen and ISO capabilities.

I still have the P45 and am waiting for my P45+. I was told Phase hopes to have all the plus backs shipped to owners with loaner backs by the end of July.

I shoot mostly at ISO 100 and the lack of comparative files between the P45 and P45+ at ISO 100 and higher around here and elsewhere makes me wonder how much of a better file I'll get. You'd think a dealer or someone would have done a test by now and if the results were apparent they'd post them or at least talk about them. But my skeptic side thinks the difference (at least at ISO 100) is marginal. I hope I am wrong. At least the screen will be better.

They do not care, what matters most is the concept & idea of the photo(s) first.
800iso is fine as long as there is acceptable noise, what matters most
is concept. Think like an editor, when you look at your photo, what do
you see first, concept or tech shit. If you look for tech crap first then
your behind, if you "see" the concept first then your ahead.

Gary,

The screen, is just beautiful,,cristal clear.   You will love it.

I did the same,I  change my p25 for p45+,  now I can see when, Michael, say you can see ants at 50 feet away.   (counting ants), remember the title?

Now I can say with p45+  is counting half ant or smaller then that.

I just love p45+

I have had P25 and P45 backs on my Contax 645 in the mountains of Spain and Corsica, and on the shore of the Med, and the worst; Seattle!

:-)

Keep on the camera. I have had little issue with 'dust bunnies" except of all places in the Italian Lakes (can't figure).

Also, sounds strange but I keep the protector on the LCD. It is tougher than the screen itself for rough areas (like rocks and granches.)

But a great combo since it is heavy but dense. I actually had more problem with a Leica R9/DMR.
